Can I use home dye over highlights?

My natural colour is mid brown and I have some greys appearing now. During the summer I like ti have highlights but now I am much paler I think they look very harsh and wash me out. They are a bit brassy and my brown, grey roots are showing.

I'd like to go more to my natural colour for winter but can't afford regular colour at hairdresser.

Do you think I could use a home dye and do it myself? If not what's the most cost effective solution that I should ask hairdresser for?

I would maybe try a semi colour first. I'm not sure how a permanent dye would go over hi lights.

Yes I always dye brown over bleach. Depending on the colour you are using it might not take as well on the lighter bits. But then you get nice lowlights Smile.

yes you can but the highlights will be a lighter colour than the rest

Sorry to hijack, would a blonde dye work over highlights? I always did it myself until stupidly letting a friend who recently qualified as a hairdresser loose at me with foils Angry roots are getting quite bad now but I think she left the bleach on too long as it's incredibly pale blonde. I just want to get it back to how it was!

It can be Rockchick but I think it's best to try to stay with an ash based blonde. But Im not 100% sure.
