Where do I look for suits?

minipie · 31/10/2013 18:24

I need to wear a suit sometimes for work, however my current collection (of 3) is either ancient and raggedy or far too small. I really need another one at least, ideally two.

I can't seem to find anywhere selling suits though? I've looked at Reiss and Hobbs which are the only places I can think of and nothing is quite right - Reiss had a nice navy suit ("Jet" style) but is sold out in my size. Who else sells suits?

I don't mind spending quite a bit (say up to £500) for nice quality. I'm 5'3, size 8 on top and 8/10 on bottom, smallish waist, big bottom and thighs. I look better in shortish or hip length jackets rather than long line.

Any ideas gratefully received...

I second austin reed there are some real bargains in their outlet. Banana republic also good my current navy suit is from there and it's a classic but modern cut and fully lined trousers. Sizes in Banana republic are mental tho you just have to try on

fiorentina · 31/10/2013 19:27

Mine are all from Banana Republic or Jigsaw. I would recommend them.

What's your budget?

How sober a suit do you need?

tethersend · 31/10/2013 22:51

Don't forget M&S- if you can look past the dodgy styling, things like this could work well.

minipie · 31/10/2013 23:01

Thanks tethers! Reasonably sober (am a lawyer) but a bit of interesting detailing would be nice rather than totally plain.

I really like the jacket shape of that m and s one! I love single button jackets with a deep v. I don't know if the black and white would suit me (I'm kind of washed out colouring...) but worth going to try it on, thanks!

just found a couple of nice ones at LK Bennett, this looks lovely and the trouser shape isn't too skinny. what do you think?

Budget could go up to about £500...

I like that one.

Also have a look at Jaeger- some nice combinations here for example.

oscarwilde · 31/10/2013 23:50

Emporia Armani. Weirdly they don't put half their stuff on display though so its worth having a chat with a sales assistant. Fab cut and quality, dry cleans well and timeless without being boring. £500 should do it (unless you wanted three for £500) and definitely hit their sales. Jaeger and Max Mara great too but tend to be high waisted and a bit more matronly. Fab work dresses in Jaegar though and their stuff is regularly half price. Grin

For some weird reason I am on the mailing list for a company called The Fold London. Gorgeous women's workwear, including suits and shift dresses.

(It's weird because I mostly work from home in a fetching dressing gown-flipflop-trackkieBs combo Grin)

duckyfuzz · 01/11/2013 07:32

Hobbs suits are good too and often available from their outlet section

minipie · 01/11/2013 08:37

Brilliant, thanks for the suggestions, I will get trawling.

I love Slaters for suits. They also do free alterations e.g. Sleeve length / trouser length in store.

Sorry - two lots of mat leave almost back to back so it's been a while since I've done any high end shopping keep meaning to lose 2 stone before doing anymore "investment dressing" . Apparently prices have sky rocketed. Definitely worth having a root around in the sales though.

bookishandblondish · 01/11/2013 17:49

Hugo Boss if you're an hour glass: their sales are very good.

Also piazza sempione which is expensive so only ever buy in the sales.

minipie · 02/11/2013 08:36

thanks!

So I tried on the Lk bennett suit I linked to earlier, don't like it much, bit too much going on in the jacket for me. lovely fabric but not right.

I've found a nice looking option in Hobbs outlet here and brilliantly they also have a matching dress and trousers in my size. I also found this dress with matching jacket, so I'm ordering all that to try on. Thanks for the suggestion duckyfuzz!

Emporio Armani is a bit out of my budget (I need to get the whole suit within £500 whereas they are £500 for the jacket!) but will look out for them in outlet/sales.

Slaters I have never heard of, thanks choco, I like quite a few of the styles but they only seem to do those ones in 10/12 upwards gah. Their prices are impressively low - what's the fabric like?

Hugo Boss looks good, just having a look through now.
