Desperate Advice Needed!! Black Tie functions

Hello gurus. It's me. The hopeless one who seems absolutely unable to find anything that suits me.

My DH has a couple of Christmas Do's through his work. I am expected to come too and look glam (guffaw!!).

I did try on a black jumpsuit from Next- it was gorgeous, but just didn't fit in the right places.

So back to the drawing board. I am 5'2. A size 12- but oddly shaped. No boobs, and quite wide across the hips, and chunky thighs. Not bad upper arms! I am fairly olive skinned with green eyes, and atrocious mousey brown hair- which will shortly be taken in hand and dyed a darker brown and cut into a bob.

I do own a nice pair of cream heels (quite high and stilleto heels), and a cream jacket (kind of tuxedo style) that I bought in the summer. Both of which will go with most things.

I'm happy to go with another jumpsuit (if i can find one to flatter), or a dress. Would prefer mid length, as maxi's make me look much shorter then I am.

I only have about £80 to spend.

I need help ladies- I live in jeans and fat face/crew/white stuff jumpers! I just want to look nice and not thrown together for a change!!

I don't love the jumpsuit. How about a full knee-length skirt with a nice top, or a dress with the same type of skirt? I think that style looks lovely on petite ladies, and you can wear your jacket over the top. Think you are right to avoid maxi dresses if you're not tall.

I found the same with the next jumpsuits also being 5'2 and a size 12 but the ones in DP seemed to fit much better.

This one was really nice but the 12 was way to big - would have needed at 10 possibly even an 8 but didn't have time to get it changed.

They did have more online a few weeks ago but you may have better luck in store. Topshop also had some nice one's but I never got round to trying them on.

That's great... And there's a dp in the neighbouring town so can have a look in store. I'm not dead set on a jumpsuit but think they are easy to recycle for a girls night out!

I have now had one in the post and added the photos below. I think it's okay- perhaps not the most exciting black tie outfit.... what do you think? I am quite wide bodied- and I do not have support pants on!

Sorry, jumpsuits just aren't smart enough for black tie.

What you want is a below-the-knee dress and you can find those just about anywhere.

flyingwidow · 29/10/2013 14:12

I love the first one!! Mnnnn... think I am actually going to try and go shopping instead of doing it online though- as everything looks amazing on models, and quite dull on me!! I know what you mean about the jumpsuit. I don't need to be head turning- the party isn't about me, but just a bit smarter than my slobby day to day wear!

How about something like this with gold drop earrings, heels and clutch?
