My friend is 40 in a few weeks and I'd like to get her something special for her birthday. Only problem is I'm on a budget as I'm on mat leave and money is tight at the mo.
My absolute maximum is £30. Anyone any ideas about what would be a nice gift?

What kind of thing were you thinking of? Something to wear? Make up?

As it's a milestone birthday you might want to get something that she can keep forever. How about a wonderful book on a designer she likes or by a photographer she admires?

A Lola Rose bracelet

A compact

Do you have any antique shops nearby or an auction house? You can usually pick up some lovely things for your budget, antique silver, pottery, scent bottles, sometimes jewellery, a painting.

Thank you, some great ideas. I agree, I would rather get something she can keep like jewellery or a beauty accessory. Will check your your suggestions.

Yes, definitely something to keep. Are you old friends? How about a photo of you both from your younger days? Other ideas would be jewellery or a jewellery/keepsake box. Or take her out for lunch or afternoon tea with a glass of fizz? You could probably find somewhere nice with set lunch menu for £30 for both of you. Or a nice vase with a small bunch of flowers.

What about this. Another friend and I are joining forces to buy a more substantial gift.

I think you'd have to be sure she'd wear hearts at 40 and also looks like something you could buy for £15 at next.

If your budget is bigger- a set of makeup brushes? There was a recent thread on what to buy for £50 for a 40th try that too.
