How to pull off the 'little cardi' look

Is it about size because when I try it I look like somebodys granny circa 1967.
I mean the type of cardi boden sells, hip length merino, button up, the sort of casual 'little cardi' you are meant to casually throw on over your blouse, tee, or dress to look effortless.
I hope you understand what I mean and the look I describe, but does anyone pull it off?
My dd wears skinny jeans, tees and cardis and look fab, but she is 18yrs old and skinny. I'm getting on and alas, not thin, is this why the 'little cardi' look won't work for me?
If I'm to busty/hefty to pull off this look any suggestions for a throw on cardi type of casual look would be welcome.

I wear them a lot.. The key is to get a small size . I never so mine up so I just want them to stop at my arms if you get what I mean . I'm a size 10 and always buy 6 if I can in cardis. Primark are great for these type of cardis . I always get mine from there.

If you are busty then a v neck rather than round neck cardi would look better. I wear quite fitted ones ending just on the hip and leave the bottom couple of buttons undone.

something like this

OneHandFlapping · 28/09/2013 14:43

I think you need narrow shoulders, small boobs and a tiny rib cage.

If you're an apple, or like me have shoulders like a navvy, and a rib cage like a trucker, you have no chance.

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 28/09/2013 14:44

Depends more on your shape than your weight I reckon.
I'm booby with a narrow ribcage and hip length make me look shapeless and boxy and much bigger than I am. I need fitted, cropped cardis whih are not easy to find (unless you can cough up or a £70 Pure one). I think Kettewell Colours might do them also.

I'd wear a vest/t-shirt under and have the top buttons open, witha skirt or trousers, or ideally a dress(got a bit of muffinage at the moment which I'm self-conscious about.
I'm not sure I'd describe them as 'throw it on' sort of clothes - but then I don't really dress that way anyway. If I'm throwing my clothes n it means I'm not leaving the house!

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 28/09/2013 14:48

And what Horace said. Sadly, I own a few of the hip length variety; las timeI was abot to go out in one (mid green with dark purple skiny jeans), DD averted disaster by telling me. I looked like a cross between an old lady and a gardener!

Sorry my typng is appalling since upgrading my phone.

HometownUnicorn · 28/09/2013 14:49

you need the right cardie
it's the fit that will stop you looking grannyish, so what works for me might look awful on you.

I love these ones

Agree depends on your shape, I am quite busty and have a big arse but waist is not too bad. The style I wear are like this lp.hm.com/hmprod?set=key

bugger will practice links first Confused

Iseeall · 28/09/2013 15:26

thanks, you have all really just confirmed what I thought.

They are the worst length for me(apple shape) and I understand what some of you have said, about sizing down. It won't work for me i'm a plus sizeBlush.

So longline cardis for me from now onGrin

I wear mine open, usually with the sleeves pulled up to 3/4 length.I'm very busty so would look daft with them done up!
