Confused by boots. Is there a dummies guide?

I love looking at all these threads about boots and I love boot shopping. However I have no idea what suits me and what to wear with what.
Are there any rules?
What should knee length boots be worn with? Should mid calf boots be baggy or tight? Any rules for body shape-I'm an apple and feel most comfortable in mid calf boots. Should I try ankle boots?

I NEED rules. What looks good and what looks bad?

I am an apple, and I love to wear knee high black boots with wrap-style dresses. That is not a rule, just what I like. In fact, THAT is the rule - wear what you feel comfortable and happy in!
