do I really need to part with all my old half used make up? I've got stuff that must have been brought 3/4 yrs ago and barely used (mostly benefit).
would it be so bad to keep and use occasionally or is that just far too gross?

Someone will doubtless be along very shortly to tell you to bin it, with tales of infection, rashes and skin falling off Grin
I'd chuck mascara as that seems a risk too far for me, but I'd keep the rest.
If that makes me gross, fair enough. I can live with gross!

VelvetStrider · 22/09/2013 10:23

That seems quite new to me. I still have an eyeshadow that I bought in 1982! I think you have to be more careful with wet stuff like mascara, and I did throw out some blusher that went mouldy, but as long as you don't suffer from things like conjunctivitis, cold sores or impetigo, it can't be that bad to use old make-up.

bunnymother · 22/09/2013 10:53

I use all my old make up, unless it seems like it needs to be binned ie dried out. I prob wouldn't use old mascara, and lipstick starts to smell odd when old, but the eyeshadow a and blush, why not? And eyeliner can just be sharpened back a bit. I quite like finding an old colour again.

ZacharyQuack · 22/09/2013 11:22

If it looks ok and smells ok, I'd use it. I chuck mascaras pretty regularly, but everything else I use until it runs out or I lose it.

WowOoo · 22/09/2013 11:25

I keep old blushers and shadows. Eyeliners I sharpen and wipe clean.
Mascara never goes off for me as I have 1 or 2 on the go at any time.

But I do wash my brushes from time to time. Makes such a mess in the sink.

WowOoo · 22/09/2013 11:33

Another idea:
Clear out what you haven't used for a month and put it away in a box.
There was a lot more space.
Then when ds1 and friends needed to look like a zombie I had loads of grey, green, brown, purple, pink and blue make up ready for their transformations!

You never know when you might need it.

TallulahBetty · 22/09/2013 11:52

I would.chuck mascara. Anything else keep unless it smells or looks odd.

cartoontrickster · 22/09/2013 11:59

not as gross as I thought then. Grin
I've never understood the use by dates on make up, I don't see how anyone could use it up in time. apart from the bits you use everyday that is.

EllaMenOhPea · 22/09/2013 12:49

I think they're the manufacturers pulling a fast one to get you to replace perfectly good make up.

TallulahBetty · 22/09/2013 13:42

Isn't it just that certain products that do go off (food, cosmetics, etc) must by law have a "use by" date? Obvs you don't have to pay attention to them but I think it's required that they do have a guideline on them.

Nagoo · 22/09/2013 13:45

I have some ancient make up :) The only thing I'd chuck out was cream or mascara. And foundation/ concealer goes weird. Powder stuff is fine, and just sharpen a pencil :)

lucysmam · 22/09/2013 14:14

This is reassuring! I have some ancient Urban Decay eyeshadows that I was wondering about....just because they were so pricey to buy!

GobblersKnob · 22/09/2013 14:23

I have eyeshadows that are at least 15/16 years old Grin

Mascara I only have one on the go at a time and it doesn't even last me six months.

Agree with all above, sharpen pencils, throw away lipstick, foundation, concealer, that looks/smells funny.

cartoontrickster · 22/09/2013 20:14

yay! Grin
anyone know about hair products? blow dry sprays, serum etc do they go off?

OP posts:
lucysmam · 22/09/2013 20:38

cartoon, I can't imagine they'd have time to go off....I go through stuff like that relatively quickly....apart from the waxy stuff I have sat unused for a good while Confused

cartoontrickster · 22/09/2013 20:39

trouble is I got lazy and stopped using product every day. I must have had some of it 5/6 yrs!

OP posts:
BinksToEnlightenment · 23/09/2013 06:41

My rule is: if it looks ok and smells ok, it probably is ok. It's a palette, not an omelette!

TallulahBetty · 23/09/2013 10:01

Grin at "palette not an omellete" - must remember that one!

NoComet · 23/09/2013 10:06

As some one who probably only wears make up once a month, most of mine is antique.

Except for chucking foundation which seperates and looks odd, I don't worry.

RhinestoneCowgirl · 23/09/2013 10:09

When I was a teenager I found my mum's Mary Quant eyeshadow pallette from circa 1972 - she was still using it quite happily.

I only tend to chuck out mascara regularly because it goes odd. I don't wear make-up that much so have some fairly elderly eyeshadows.
