Obvious places like Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus, etc. But very pricey.

Macy's can be good, with a wide selection of styles at a good selection of price points. Particularly as they usually have good sales/discounts. And the sales assistants seem to have the authority to offer additional discounts on the spot.

Century 21 is a mammoth discount store.

www.c21stores.com/

There are 2 branches in NYC, one massive one in the financial district opposite ground zero and one much smaller one near the Lincoln Center. Obviously it's hit and miss, but I've found some amazing bargains (Prada skirt for $150, Alexander McQueen jumper for $125) and the financial district one can be pretty hellish, unless you get there right when it opens.

I've never been, but a lot of friends have visited Woodbury Common Outlet Center:

You can get a bus there from the Port Authority at 42nd and 8th.

Have a lovely time!

Try posting this in long haul travel too.

TallulahBetty · 17/09/2013 10:14

Lucky lucky you!

Sephora is a must! They let you play with all the make up too!
If you like budget shops then Old Navy in Herald square is good (right near Macy*s)
Also the Gap is cheaper there
And for more lotions, potions and general hair and beauty stuff, BedBathandBeyond is a good one!

GERTgert06 · 17/09/2013 12:46

If visiting Macy's, show your passport to the customer services department on the Mezzanine floor and you'll be given a card for 10% off most things in the store. I like the lower east side for bargain buys. Enjoy!

MrsHowardRoark · 17/09/2013 12:54

Woodbury Commons is well worth the visit if you want to do some serious shopping. I spent a small fortune there at Christmas.

Manhattan is really easy to get around so don't worry about travel too much.

PoppyWearer · 17/09/2013 12:57

Another vote for Sephora here Envy

It's also worth popping into Walgreen's and browsing the aisles for odds and ends we can't get here/huge bottles of your favourite products.

And Kiehl's.

SilverSixpence · 17/09/2013 20:22

I would go to anthropologie and J Crew, bit cheaper than in the UK.

bunnymother · 17/09/2013 21:01

J Crew for sure. And Banana Republic. And buy any kiehls skin care there. Another shop that had done good work wear was Express Fashion, but was hit and miss (some things cheap and nasty, others were terrific). Do walk down 5th Ave past Tiffanys and Harry Winston - much fun. And stock up on great, cheap beauty items at Duane Reed and other drugstores.

The Monkey Bar is very Old New York. Dress up for drinks.

Talkinpeace · 17/09/2013 21:24

American Apparel
Macy's - hmmmm. not where I'd spend money
Barney's on the other hand ....
MOMA store has lovely things
Tiffany's to gawp

eat at Essabagel

Celticlassie · 17/09/2013 21:27

Abercrombie's definitely cheaper, if you're that way inclined. I got two hoodies and a t shirt for £94. If you're near South Street Seaport go to the store there rather than queuing for the 5th Avenue one.

Talkinpeace · 17/09/2013 21:59

South Street Seaport is gone.
They closed all the stores after the damage of Sandy
Even Pier 17 closed last week.

NB : when you buy clothes in NYC, the price on the tag is BEFORE 7% sales tax (akin to UK VAT) which is added at the till.

Celticlassie · 17/09/2013 22:31

Oh, how sad. I liked South Street Seaport.

Talkinpeace · 17/09/2013 22:35

It had over 15 feet of water through it last October : they were still trying to dry the buildings when I was there at Christmas - but everything in all the stores was destroyed. All of the docks were damaged, Pier 17 was open (just) but with nothing around it.
We did have the worst ever coffee there.

impty · 18/09/2013 07:46

Wow! Thank you ladies.
