Protecting new leather boots?

Ok, so I have succumbed and now own a pair of Hudson Horrigans . Do I need to spray them with shoe protector before wearing them or, being leather, will they be ok?

I always spray leather shoes after a disaster with a pair of APC sandals in the rain (the edges became brittle and discoloured, really got my back up).

I currently use a can that came with my mulberry bag.

oh and if you get a can, do it outside, the smell is extreme!
