Top tips for layering

I always end up looking like a clueless teenager or a hopeless hippie.
What is the secret for a beautiful layering look?

Not too many layers, and a handful of different lengths and textures. And sticking to colours that tone well (a few different shades of peach and grey, for example, or khaki and cream).
