I've managed to snaffle a few at cheap prices from ebayers who have just listed them as 'scented candle', perhaps not realising the make is important.
Many, many years ago I asked my then MIL to get me some Diptyque candles as she was going to Paris for a long weekend with her friend. There was a shop not far from where she was staying that I knew sold the candles, so I gave her a list and offered to give her the money in advance, which she declined.
I explained to her that they were a luxury candle but were cheaper in Paris than London at the time.
When she came home, she had a lovely paper gift bag waiting for me. I was so excited and looking forward to my candles.
I opened the wrapping to discover the most disgusting handbag that I have ever seen that I believe she didn't even buy in France but bought from Southend on Sea Market.
She told me with glee, " we went to see those candles, bloody stupid prices, complete waste of money. I know you'll like the bag more. Isn't it gorgeous.....?"
Cow.
