luxury basics advice please...

I am tall and I don't have a tumble dryer. As a result, cotton basics often don't fit properly (too short, sleeves ride up, cotton tops stretch when not dried in a tumble dryer etc.)
I would like to 'invest' in some really good quality flattering basics (long sleeved layering tee, long length modal vest tops, loungewear...).
Does anyone have any good recommendations? I bought a Mary Portas long sleeved black t shirt and it was so tight in areas and gathered in weird places and then got a little rip (and I bought it in the right size). I have tried J Crew but their stuff is baggy and stretches badly without being tumble dried. Any advice greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I am short and can't buy from Baukjen and Planet, so they might work for you?

The White Company basics are good, but stay well clear of anything with wool. Bobbles within 20 mins of wearing. The cotton basics like this are good and there's usually a 15/20% off code going around for them.

I only buy other stuff in the sale as far too pricey IMO.

Im going to suggest a totally nonluxury retailer - matalan.Really good quality crew-neck modal/cotton long sleeved t shirts and very long vest tops in cotton/lycra that wash brilliantly.Brora also do really good quality t's.

apparently White Stuff quality has gone down in recent years.

Jigsaw used to do long sleeved basic t-shirts (darker colours), Uniqlo are good for thermal ones (Heat tex?).

Am trying and failing to think of nice vest tops - I don't like M&S. I can see a few tops I like - the vest ones. will try and remember and go back to you. maybe Boden?

aarrggg sorry not White STUFF white COMPANY

Bearleigh · 02/09/2013 13:42

Goodstuff I have had very good experiences from Uniqlo, and they aren't even that expensive. Their cotton T shirts are great, last very well without twisting, and are very long in the body; their linen shirts are etremely good quality, and Heat-tech is just brilliant for keeping warm in winter.

Otherwise, for really good quality cotton that lasts and lasts, I love Margaret Howell T shirts, and Agnes B.

I forgot - Oasis do this t-shirt (long sleeved) you can/could layer it. I got 2 in grey and I think navy or black. Got my mum one too. washes well and nice and soft. keeps shape well too.

Zara can be ok for basics too

MissDD1971 · 02/09/2013 13:45

Bearleigh you're correct re Uniqlo - I'm long bodied too and their tops are great for that.

Esprit do excellent vests in a variety of changing colours. Nice & long in the body.

I've never used a tumble dryer to compare, but the Esprit vests last years and hold shape well. They are often on offer too when I snap up one in every colour.

BeCool · 02/09/2013 15:06

my Primark long sleeve wide neck black tops from last year have held up really well too

Laquila · 02/09/2013 15:08

I find the M&S vests from their underwear section (particularly the ribbed Supima ones with stretch) are nice and long, and wash well - useful neutral colours too.

Chocolateteabag · 06/09/2013 07:52

I have two looooong maxi dresses from Me&Em and the jersey is really good. So I am hoping that their tops are the same - look very long fit. Just need to evict my tummy squatter and will be looking at their site again.

Isabella Oliver /Baukjen jersey is ok - can be a little thin but mine all washes well.

CharlotteBr0nteSaurus · 06/09/2013 07:58

am wearing a long sleeved t from uniqlo today, and they're great. wash well (no drier here either) and not expensive. I am 5'9" and long in the body, and they've got room lengthways IYSMIM. only problem is that they've no stores north of London Sad

mysteryfairy · 06/09/2013 09:12

Splendid v neck layering top

round neck

These are great - properly long.

I also have this Isabella Oliver extra long t shirt in multiple colours but the ones I have bought more recently haven't washed as well as the really old ones I have so would hesitate to buy them at full price.
