I would like a perfume but don't know where to start. Help.

I haven't worn perfume or years.

I know what doesn't suit me! Obsession and aromatics, youth dew are way too heavy on me.

Armani diamonds is sort of nice but had a bit of a chemical smell, same with Marc Jacobs Honey. Although the MJ one was nice after 3 hours!

I don't want to wait that long for perfume to settle.

So I want something floral and not overpowering and fashionable.

Has anyone got a list of suggestions so that I can try some?

Givenchy Dahlia Noir is v. V nice - florally deep. It's quite new or I wouldn't have noticed it.

Much cheaper on eBay than shops though

LillyNotOfTheValley · 31/08/2013 17:39

Envy me, Gucci
Miss Dior Cherie

Or you could try "Little Black Dress", Guerlain (v fashionable)

On the hipster side:
Anything from Etat Libre d'Orange (etatlibredorange.com/boutique2/en/parfums/) or Diptyque (Love this one: www.diptyqueparis.co.uk/personal-fragrances/eau-de-toilettes/lombre-dans-leau-edt.html)

One of the nicest and least expensive perfumes is Burberry's original one:

Ten quid cheaper at the perfume shop (link)

I have had more compliments on this one (more so than my expensive perfume) than I can count!

Mmm, Lilly, L'Ombre dans l'eau is beautiful. I wear Do Son by Diptyque, which you might like flipchart. It's floral - tubereuse and jasmine - rich, but not heavy, lasts a good while. And it's got me a few compliments! Diptyque looks dear on first glance (£60-65) but the bottles are 100ml so it works out cheaper than some more mainstream fragrances.

I love Chloe Narcisse. I have SJP Lovely at the monent. JLO Glow is also nice. All pretty reasonably priced.

I hadn't bothered with perfume for years, either - just nice body creams. But I love Jo Malone scents; really light, lovely combinations. Why not go in there and have a play? Blackberry and Bay is gorgeous, for a start.

PoppyAmex · 31/08/2013 19:04

If you have the time and patience, the best thing to do is to pick two or three perfumes you think you might like, spray yourself at the shop (inner wrists and inner elbows for example) and let it develop during the day.

If you like floral but subtle I'd recommend Jo Malone's Gardenia or Fracas (tuberose mainly)

MiconiumHappens · 31/08/2013 19:24

If you like She/Elle by Armani the Next perfume Devine smells EXACTLY the same I wear this and it's a third of the price.

BetteDavis01 · 31/08/2013 20:15

Britney Spears - curious
Christian Dior Poison ( red bottle)
Narcisco Rodriguez - For her

Go into a department store and get squirting!

Youth Dew I strong but you could try dolche and gabanna femme... My aunt wears youth dew and I recently bought it no she loved it.

Have you tried jean Paul gaudier?

Alien seems to be popular.. Strong

LeoandBoosmum · 31/08/2013 20:49

Stella (the original with amber) is gorgeous, esp in cooler months...

Doinmummy · 02/09/2013 16:08

I've just opened the front door and taken delivery of my first Jo Malone perfume. I bought it on the back of a recent thread on here.

It's very different but I love it.

ElizaDoMore · 02/09/2013 19:19

Doinmummy Which Jo Malone did you get?

needastrongone · 02/09/2013 19:28

DH does a fair bit of overseas travel for business so I get whatever he likes the look of!

Daytime - anything from the davidoff range is light and easy and pretty cheap.

I also have, but didn't pick myself, butterfly by Matthew Williamson, Fendi, Chance by Chanel, Flower Bomb by Victor Wolf. I like them all but apart from the Matthew Williamson one, would use them in the evening but that might be just me!

'Scuse typos as I'm on the phone!

Doinmummy · 02/09/2013 19:31

I got the Lime Basil and Mandarin one. Also got a free sample of the Blackberry and Bay. Even the box is lovely Grin

Repeatedlydoingthetwist · 02/09/2013 19:39

Stella and Miss Dior Cherie are both good shouts, although the MDC is a bit sweet for some people. If you liked Honey once it settled have you tried Dot? Also by Marc Jacobs.
If its floral you're after Gucci Flora is lovely, and lasts ages, and Lola, also by MJ.

SilkStalkings · 04/09/2013 17:08

Ultraviolet by Paco Rabanne is sweet and floral - sort of pretty but sexy smell.
