Double breasted vs single breasted coats & jackets

I've never had a double-breasted coat, jacket, anything. I'm looking at some winter coats and I found a few double-breasted ones that look nice. Are there some particular style rules about these? I'm 5' 7'' and size 12-14 if that makes a difference.

I think the 'rule' is that if you're busty then double breasted coats can make you look a bit top heavy and wider than you are. But I am a little busty and have had one before anyway as I still like the look of them! Just try a few on and see what you feel good in - being 5ft 7 will help as I'm only 5ft 2 so some coats drown me!

Thanks LPB, if it's not more complicated than that then I should be fine. I don't know why I had such an aversion to them.
