Going braless if you are small of nork...

and don't really need the support of a bra?

I've started doing it recently..not under very sheer clothes but under a lightweight jumper and today with a wrap dress.

The reaction has been unexpected! Two friends who said it was overly provocative and another who said "what will you do in the chiller bit in tesco" Hmm

Male friend who commented on my lack of bra and said its much more out there than having big boobs on show.

Thoughts?

I often do this, and people rarely notice/comment!

I recently broke my wrist and needed help to put on a bra so didn't wear one for about 6 weeks. I tend to wear dark clothes, but really think it is a non event when I do it.

Toomuchcontact · 21/08/2013 14:31

I've be er really done it before because of the nipple issue. Male friend said nipple outline was more of a 'thing' than boobs displayed in a bra.

I just want to not have to wear a bra! I wonder if I could tot tape them down?!

it's just not something we are used to seeing. If you're comfortable and ok with others' reactions then go for it. I'd probably want to wear something for some opacity/ coverage, like a camisole or crop top. Though actually I'm insanely jealous and fed up with my huge tits and the scaffolding required.

VerySmallSqueak · 21/08/2013 14:31

I thought I heard recently that it's good for your breasts to not wear a bra.

Forget the daft 'overly provocative' comments and continue in comfort without the massive expense of buying bras you don't need.

Toomuchcontact · 21/08/2013 14:33

Tit tape. And I don't really care but jealous friend said people will think you are being purposely provocative...

VerySmallSqueak · 21/08/2013 14:33

If you feel more comfortable with more nipple coverage, perhaps a soft crop top?

SorrelForbes · 21/08/2013 14:43

Did your friends notice or did they comment because you told them?

I don't think it matters though, it's whatever you feel comfortable with.

Toomuchcontact · 21/08/2013 14:50

No friend one said "you've forgotten your bra" during lunch

Ah, so noticeable then. I've got fairly large norks so I couldn't even contemplate going braless but if you're Ok with it and their small enough not to be causing you any physical discomfort, then why not?

Just for info, I think the 'research' that was done on women not wearing a bra focused on very petite, athletic women who would not gain much from wearing one anyway. Anyone larger runs the risk of gravity taking over control of the ligaments that support the breasts.

I have large breasts and did this for years pre pregnancy as mine had not 'dropped' yet despite their size. I hate bra's and even now will wear one only if I really feel the need to.

Only one friend ever noticed when we were sitting under air conditioning and my sensitivity to cold gave me away. He didn't say anything about it being provocative although I think it is considered more provocative than huge hooters.

When I finish breastfeeding I plan on going bra-less again and will just be using nipple tape to avoid another cold induced moment of near awkwardness with my friend.

Bra's are not healthy for women's bodies and more and more research is being done into whether or not they may contribute to rising rates of breast cancer.

proteins · 21/08/2013 15:35

I would love to go bra-less but for the nipple issue. Bras chaff my skin and makes my dermatitis worse. I've tried multiple versions of those nipple shields but they just fall off!

Any suggestions would be great, I work in quite a male oriented environment so dare not quite brazen it out.

SorrelForbes · 21/08/2013 15:55

proteins Have you posted on any of the bra threads? There is a lot of knowledge there about bras which could be suitable for you.

Bra's are not healthy for women's bodies Could you link to the research please, it sounds interesting.

SofaCanary · 21/08/2013 15:56

There is something very, very sexy about it, much more so than an expanse of pushed up cleavage. It's a youthful, carefree look and I'd do it in a heart beat if I could!

missbopeep · 21/08/2013 16:36

Unless they are tiny AA or A cup, just don't. And they need to be perky as well.

I don't think braless is a good look on anyone- pre teens or grown women.

There is no research that shows wearing a bra is bad for your breasts- how can it be? They are made up mainly of fat with muscle underneath. It's worse for them to dangle and stretch, and stretch the skin too.

missbopeep · 21/08/2013 16:38

popping where is this research showing links with cancer?( And there's no apostrophe is bras- it's a plural word- you just add an 's'.)

Allthingspretty · 21/08/2013 16:41

Op buy some nipple daisies and www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B006ZM6Y84 then maybe the nipple thing will be a non issue

cardamomginger · 21/08/2013 16:42

Cancer Research UK says there is no scientific evidence that wearing any type of bra can cause cancer.

poppingin1 · 21/08/2013 17:16

OK...

Have I accidentally hit a nerve or something? Confused

I said research was being carried out into links between wearing bras and breast cancer, I never said it was a proven fact that there was a link, so of course they wouldn't have info on it on the Cancer Research UK site. The research isn't proven, I was simply pointing out that it is being carried out, which to me is enough reason to look into whether or not wearing a bra is really all that necessary on an individual basis. If I am incorrect, then fair enough, I am misinformed and it has been pointed out.

A French doctor (Jean-Denis Rouillon) recently stated that after a 15 year study, he has found bras to be useless and potentially damaging to women's overall health.

The research hasn't been published as far as I know but should be soon and I am looking forward to reading it.

There has been talk of bras possibly increasing the chances or breasts sagging by immobilizing the coopers ligaments for a while before the current study came to light anyway. There was a Japanese study that didn't get much attention.

Lazysuzanne · 21/08/2013 17:22

bra's causing breast cancer??
wait a minute...I'm pretty sure that nearly every woman who has had breast cancer will have worn a bra

So there you have it there's a proven link between bra's and breast cancer!

(I hope I dont need to point out that I am being facetious)

SorrelForbes · 21/08/2013 17:24

But you did say this: Bra's are not healthy for women's bodies Based on what?

That study by the French doctor was pretty useless for the reasons I gave above.

feelinlucky · 21/08/2013 17:31

If I had small boobs I would never ever wear a bra and i would deliberately jiggle, lots :) I'm very jealous.

missbopeep · 21/08/2013 17:35

A French doctor (Jean-Denis Rouillon) recently stated that after a 15 year study, he has found bras to be useless and potentially damaging to women's overall health.

Why did he find bras 'useless'? Did he not know they are meant for women? Grin

I read that piece and it was laughed at by other doctors.

Lazysuzanne · 21/08/2013 17:35

no doubt the french doctor studied women who had health problems and fond that wearing a bra was one thing they all had in common, he then deduced that the bra must cause ill health in women.

Ill health in men is presumably caused by some other common factor such as walking or cleaning your teeth Confused

poppingin1 · 21/08/2013 17:37

I have already clarified what I meant about the cancer and bras issue.

Lazy you also made the statement "Anyone larger runs the risk of gravity taking over control of the ligaments that support the breasts."

I could also point out that this idea has no scientific merit.

Why is the French doctors research useless? He has conducted a decade and a half of research. No research has factually proven that wearing a bra is beneficial to a woman no matter what size their breasts, but research is emerging from long term studies potentially saying that bras may actually be harmful. According to the doctors research, bras may negatively affect a woman's back health and breathing.
