AIBU to have gone off the 'hair doughnut' style? Is it trashy now?

I really liked the hair doughnut style as it was a simple and easy way to create a glamorous look and great for me as I have thin/ frizzy hair so need to wear it up. It's also a great way for me to disguise the fact that I don't have much hair!

However recently I have seen a few people with 'hair doughnut' hair and thought they looked really trashy (not just because of the hair doughnut, just the overall look).

What's your view on the hair doughnut? Trashy or glam?

It depends on the clothes and jewellery you wear with it though. I have a heavy fringe, so it doesn't have that ultra scraped back look.

Grin Are you very young Winnicas? I think Michaella McCollum thingy is going to look back in a few years time and go 'OMG, my face splashed all over the world's newspapers and what did I look like, with that comedy six foot hair?'

(looking on the bright side and hoping she's not got far bigger things to worry about in a few years time Confused)

Winnicas · 21/08/2013 10:12

I'm 35 Blush In my defence, I've only done the high bun thing once, in public that is, for a christening where everyone else was 7ft tall and I'm just over 5ft. With a knee length shift and no jewellery and hardly any make up.

TheOneAndOnlyFell · 21/08/2013 10:14

Oh. Sorry. This thread must be making you feel bad. Grin

cheerfulweatherforthewedding · 21/08/2013 10:14

It's put me off having my normal (small, back of head) buns at the moment, I'm waiting for it all to die down and fall out of fashion amongst the teens Grin

Winnicas · 21/08/2013 10:18

nah, I'm hardcore Grin

I do think it's in the way you wear it though. It can look really nice, but you can't wear loads of make up or big jewellery with it. Or anything low cut or short come to think of it.... Wink

Longdistance · 21/08/2013 10:19

I've used all manner of sized buns in my hair in my previous job.
I have a huge one for special occasions, and wear it at the back of my head, not on top drug mule styley, that's just wrong on many levels she does look like she needs a good wash though

talkingnonsense · 21/08/2013 10:29

So how do you put your hair up and look classy?!! For work, think teacher/ nurse not model!

Oh, Horrace, I do that a LOT. I love it.

I will upload a picture later of the way I wear mine. I can always nc again if you all laugh at me Wink Grin

lottieandmia · 21/08/2013 10:48

It doesn't look trashy if you do it smoothly. All girls under the age of 21 or so seem to have it high up on the head in a messy way. They all look the same and I don't think that particular style is a good look.

LoopThePoop · 21/08/2013 10:57

Back of head, nice sleek glam.
Top of head, trash fest!

mignonette · 21/08/2013 11:05

DS GF wears a cool version of this, not a huge 'Drug smuggler' doughnut Wink but a neat little twist on her crown w/ wispy bits. What makes the difference is your makeup and clothing. She doesn't plaster it on neither does she wear scanty clothing.

It needn't look TOWIE.

TheOneAndOnlyFell · 21/08/2013 11:06

Does anyone in TOWIE do this then? I haven't seen it since the first series. I'd have said it was more of a Scouser thing.

BeginnerSAHM · 21/08/2013 11:12

Drat - just found a small one that works and started using it...! But only wear it low and a bit messy... Hope that's not trashy Wink. (Def not much make-up or bling going on here if that helps?). I seem to be about 2 years behind...

mignonette · 21/08/2013 11:14

I kind of meant that as an example of how an actually pretty hairstyle/clothing can be subverted in not a good way by a group of 'celebrities'. I have seen some of those TOWIE people with it (Lucy).

I like the style when it is done in a work day/non glam manner.

HungryGeorge · 21/08/2013 11:21

I can't do it. My hair seems too fine to cover the doughnut thingy - how do you get around that?

dufflefluffle · 21/08/2013 11:27

Funny so many of you think the drug smuggling donut looks trashy. Everytime I see it on telly, I think: I'd be so much more sympathetic if the hair wasn't so irritating Hmm or maybe I'm just making excuses.

Vintagebeads · 21/08/2013 11:30

It always reminds me of the Ryanair girls, I fly with them a lot and they all have the buns.

I think they look fine a bit messy and in the nape or slightly to the side.

The ones of the top of the head lot daft on anyone except maybe a seven year old bridesmaid

mignonette · 21/08/2013 11:31

I just twist mine around and pin it. Sometimes I make a high ponytail then wind it around itself and pin. You can wrap a ribbon around the base of the bun and pin that too. There are tutorials online and your hair stylist can show you how. They look better, more stylish without that hideous doughnut thing anyway.

is a good method for thick straight hair and here is a ballet bun.
PoshPaula · 21/08/2013 11:36

Am really enjoying your posts, OneandOnly, very funny!

TheOneAndOnlyFell · 21/08/2013 11:39

It's all part of the service.

liquidstate · 21/08/2013 12:24

Top of head is trashy, back or side is very nice and not out dated in my opinion. Its better with some hair loose or a fringe, rather than all pulled back 'Croydon Facelift' style. I prefer the messier look myself but that's because I am lazy!

Vibbe · 21/08/2013 12:40

I don't like it on top of the head, but think it looks fine if quite far down.
Also, using the biggest doughnut available is not nice at all.

I use them every so often, but prefer doing a bun with these pins
