AIBU to have gone off the 'hair doughnut' style? Is it trashy now?

I really liked the hair doughnut style as it was a simple and easy way to create a glamorous look and great for me as I have thin/ frizzy hair so need to wear it up. It's also a great way for me to disguise the fact that I don't have much hair!

However recently I have seen a few people with 'hair doughnut' hair and thought they looked really trashy (not just because of the hair doughnut, just the overall look).

What's your view on the hair doughnut? Trashy or glam?

I have my hair in a doughnut bun today and I couldn't give two hoots if anyone thinks it's trashy.

I don't wear it on top of my head though and I can't seem to get it very big, despite trying. I think a sock bun works better for getting it big.

Proper hair grips pop out again in my hair, which is unruly, bouncy and layered, also only just long enough for a bun, so I have lots of loose ends and end up using about 10 of them. Spiral pins do the job much better for me.

Proper hair pins work perfectly well but spiral pins hold a lot more hair and you can shake your head about like a maniac and your hair stays put.

I stopped doing buns a year ago when I chopped my hair up to long bob length. Used to love a big messy bun, still miss it some days! Not with a donut or right on top of the head though, that's always looked odd.

Did anyone else see the tweet about the DM comments re. drug smuggling girl, asking where the black jacket was from? It was Zara TRF and the woman who commented managed to buy it.

Must admit it made me laugh.

Proper hairpins. Normal people call bobby pins hair grips. DD2 calls them Bobby pins, because she watches cute girls hairstyles on Utube and they are American.

Nice, not trashy doughnut bun, at back of head, hair not tightly scraped back

I don't get spiral pins. Old fashioned hair pins work just fine for securing ordinary ballet buns and stray ends on doughnut buns.

The spiral pins just screw from the outside into the middle of the bun, I use 3, equally spaced around the bun. They go into or under a doughnut. If using them without one the ends go into one another and lock in. They hold a lot more hair a lot better than kirbigrips.

Messy side/back bun is fine but massive sleek bun on top of the head looks like a cottage loaf!!

Is it very wrong of me to say that there is a Longchamps bag in those Peru pictures?

(I'm feeling really, really guilty for having posted this ...)

I'm totally over the doughnut bun. A smaller messy bun still looks ok, I think? I hope?

I have one of those Claire's magic bun things and can't figure that out either. I can do a Croydon facelift but that's the only hairdo I've ever mastered.

Laughing at the drug smuggler do.

Yes, it looks trashy. I like some of the alternatives so will try them out - I never mastered the doughnut anyway.

I use one of these and it gives a really easy, natural looking bun. I agree the donuts look trashy.

The drug girl's ginger roots are coming through, all that scraping it back just makes it more obvious.

The drug smuggling girl looks nearly like a geisha girl but not as alluring .

viva There are a few ways to do it. I've tried to write it out but although it's really easy, I've made it sound like the most complex process in the world Grin so if you just look on you tube and search 'sock bun' you'll find plenty of vids!

Yeah, that style officially died the moment the rather foolish drug-smuggling chick was photographed wearing one as big as her head.

It's over. That's the death-knell you're hearing.

How do you do it because I've tried with a donought.

Are you meant to put hair through it then wrap the hair round in a spiral? Or do you put hair through it and then pin it under?

Doughnut buns are a bit iffy for adults, which is a pity because they are very comfortable (and if I employ DD1, quick and easy).

They can look very good on teens DD1(15) can get her mop up neatly in about a minute. DD2(12) takes a bit longer as hers is shorter and a bit fiddly.

Do they look trashy, if DD2 added a doughnut bun and black eyeliner and lipstick to the leggings and vest top she had on today, she would only have escaped trashy because she's clearly 12. If she was a year or too older and a bit taller it would be a very dodgy look. Especially if she bleached her hair.

DD1 couldn't look trashy if she tried. If she did a huge doughnut bun, eyeliner and a bra strap showing top and leggings, she'd just look like she was going to a fancy dress party.

It just isn't her.

Instead I do a ponytail then twist it around then put another elastic around that. Looks quite neat if you can make sure to twist it all the way down the ponytail and not as "done" as the doughnut
