Bra questions

Hi all,

I hope you don't mind but I have a few bra questions....

When I'm wearing my bra I find that the wires really dig into me around by my arm pits and its quite uncomfortable.

Also when I wear my bra it feels like the wires at the bottom of the bra are sitting too low on my chest. Like its in the wrong place. Am I wearing the wrong size?

Why do bra measuring people add four inches? Everywhere I go I'm told I'm a 36 yet when I measure myself I'm a 32. I'm so confused! I need a bra interventionist to come bra shopping with me!

Thank you for helping, sorry to be so dense x

what are your measuements under and over your bust? If you measure 32 under the bust then the back measurement should be a 32 as well, no need to add on extra inches

StatisticallyChallenged · 18/08/2013 10:28

The old +4 thing doesn't work anymore but a lot of shops haven't changed their measuring guides yet

Can you measure yourself as described here and post the measurements.

It does sound like the size isn't right

Caramelbutthorn · 19/08/2013 01:15

I am a 32 under (well 31 if it's tight). I'm confused about the measuring when I bend over. How tight is the tape measure meant to be. If I keep it so i'm not squeezing my bits together it's 44 inches. But of course I can tighten the tape measure up and decrease the measurement but I'm not sure if I'm meant to be squishing myself up (I hope that makes sense!).

I've been to debenhams, M&S and John Lewis all say i'm 36ff :(
Thank you x

Ok, your measurements suggest trying a range of sizes:

Ok, your measurements suggest trying a range of sizes:
30J/JJ and a 32HH/J.

The second measurement should be quite loose.

You are certainly not a 36FF. I'm not surprised at M&S or Debenahams but I am disappointed by JL!

FuntClaps69 Try a 30E/F and a 32DD/E.

Make sure you get the band right first see this guide before sorting out the cups.

Caramelbutthorn · 19/08/2013 10:48

So the wires are poking me so much in the side because its the wrong size?

When leaning forward how loose or tight should the tape measure be?
Thank you x

Possibly yes, but it could be a style issue too. In either case, the wires are in the wrong place and/or too high/short for you.

Keep the tape loose for the leaning forward measurement.

Thank you. I'm off to do a big online bra shop (using mums credit card lol)

Sorry caramel but can I hijack your thread instead of starting a new one?

If I measure 28 under my bust and 38 around the fullest part am I right in thinking I should be wearing 28 GG because that definitely doesn't sound right to me.

I'm currently in a 34C which I know is wrong as I have red marks from the band and I'm forever falling out of the cups but surely it can't be that big a jump?

SorrelForbes · 19/08/2013 18:14

It could be. A 34C is roughly equivalent in volume to a 28E which is four cups smaller than a 28GG. If you're falling out of the cups in your current bra then you do need to move up at least a couple of cups and probably more!

Clickityclack · 19/08/2013 18:21

So shall I start with a 28E and go from there do you think?

SorrelForbes · 19/08/2013 18:24

No, a 28E is the same volume as your 34C so it will still be too small and you'll be falling out the cups.

Start with the 28GG and work down (or up) from there. It's easier to spot a cup that's too big than one that's marginally too small. Bear in mind that some bras are not going to work for you whatever the size. Are you fuller on the bottom or the top?

Clickityclack · 19/08/2013 19:42

Really? Ok. Mmmm I'd say fuller at the bottom I think....

SorrelForbes · 19/08/2013 19:46

OK, I'd look at balconettes and half cups. It's often hard to get the fit right with moulded t-shirt bras so I'd start off with unpadded styles and go from there. Some plunges and full cups might work too depending on how much fullness you have at the top and bottom and how soft your breasts are.

Clickityclack · 19/08/2013 20:12

Ok thank you sorrel I shall go try some on

TotallyBursar · 19/08/2013 20:44

May I pile in too?
I'm not sure what to do with my measurements.
Under is 35.3 in and over is 50 in, looking at the guide they say podgers might be best going down a back size so -
Would I go down to a 34 (or stick with the 36 I was planning as 34 seems v small as measured quite tightly) and then calculate the difference in inches again?

I'm aware I'm being thick!
I have to order online so wanted a rough guide but seem to add differently each time Hmm

StatisticallyChallenged · 19/08/2013 20:49

Try both :)

I'd say try a 34K/KK and a 36JJ/K

TotallyBursar · 19/08/2013 20:52

I was obviously counting incorrectly as I didn't get that Blush Good job I have no shame! Thank you Thanks

SorrelForbes · 19/08/2013 21:08

You need some dried frog pills Bursar!

TotallyBursar · 19/08/2013 21:18

Grin I would if I was brave enough to put my hands in my pockets! Actually after a walk with the dc collecting 'treasure' I dread to think, I had to stop one picking up a dry fox turd Envy my dog is much more civilised than my dc!

I think I'm just incredulous that my boobs are 50ins I mean fgs that's ridiculous. No wonder I can't get anything to fit Angry.

soupmaker · 19/08/2013 21:20

Bloody hell I'm measuring 39 under and 49 over. I have swimmers ribs so always have trouble getting a bra that fits round me comfortably. Currently breast feeding and in Bravado bras and feeding vests. All my old bras are 38DD. I've not been measured for years as I never felt comfy in anything I was told was my size and always just tried on myself until I got something that seemed okay. I completely burst out of the old bras when I do the scooping. Looking forward to bra shopping once I'm back in the underwires.

SorrelForbes · 19/08/2013 21:27

soupmaker What do your 38DDs feel like? If you put it on back to front how far can you pull it away form your body? Sounds like the cups are too small!

I'd say try a 38GG/H and possibly a 36H/HH
