Best school uniform

I am a novice at this! I have to buy school uniform for DD1. Just pinafore/skirt/trousers, tights and white polo shirt.

I'm willing to pay for quality that will last (she has a younger sister so can hand down) but equally don't want to pay over the odds.

I just wondered where people had found good?

I bought dd's pinafore from marks and Spencer, washed well and stood up to a three year old's abuse! have opted for asda this time, pinafores half the m and s price but thinner fabric.I bought an asda skirt at the same time and that is lovely, heavier material and a fully adjustable waist. tights I get pex, expensive but have lasted well. I find supermarket ones too short and yet too wide in the leg. have bought asda cardis, pure cotton and a good length.

Thanks.

Cardie has to be school one, so I don't need to worry on that one.

Weight of fabric is a good point. DD1 gets very cold and her uniform is short sleeved polo shirt and sweatshirt/sweatshirt material cardie, so maybe a warmer pinafore is important?

I know what you mean aobut tights. Thanks for the recommendation. Smile

I wouldn't count on being able to hand white polo shirts down, they get wrecked! DS had some from Asda, M&S and BHS last year and the best ones were Asda. The M&S ones that supposedly had Stain guard, or whatever it is, fared no better.

So maybe go cheap on the polo shirts and spend a bit more on the pinafores/skirts/trousers?

We have had M&S for the last 2 years and the pinafores have washed and worn really well. We have a skirt from John Lewis which again has been great. I got polo's from H&M, at £4.99 each they are a little more expensive than supermarket ones but seem thicker and wash really well.

Born - No, was assuming the polos will be totalled. I was thinking of the pinafore/skirt! Sorry, that wasn't worded very well.

Bit of a consensus here - cheap polo and maybe a bit more on the pinafores.

thanks

I go for M&S skirts as they seem to last forever, tumble dry and don't need ironing. Easily passonable!
For polos I tend to get jersey ones rather than aertex style. Cheaper the better as they get wrecked. Tesco, Asda - did try M&S but no difference in quality.
Now if anyone could recommend grey tights that don't bobble I would be very grateful!Grin

Asda as good as Tesco? Not that I am lazy and want to go to the one which is closer. ..

Asda polos shrink, and I don't tumble dry.Having said that I like them the most, and just size up by 2 years! M&S pinafores last years but I would order a few styles as the quality varies hugely.Outstanding value ones always look a bit dodgy in the fit and finish to me,but am trying that range of tights against my usual M&S ones this year.

I bought Florence and Fred pinafores two years ago and they have been great.
I buy cotton cardigans from Matalan because I can't abide the bobbling that happens to man made ones. I bought skirts and trousers from there recently which look good but have not been used yet.
M&S trousers, tights and polo shirts were all poor. Tesco tights poor too. Definitely on the lookout for good quality non bobbling tights. Pref cotton.
Everything drys on the radiator which extends the life of them. Expect to replace polo shirts frequently.

VillaVillekulla · 16/08/2013 11:46

I recommend this pinafore from M&S. M&S blouses seem to last well too.

John Lewis tights have lasted better than M&S ones but they do still bobble.

ygritte · 16/08/2013 13:24

I forgot Next for trousers/ They have an adjustable waistband and are quite a slim fit.
I agree with Villa...that is the best pinafore out of the Marks bunch.

Thanks for all the extra comments! Off to trawl the shops with DD1 today and we'll see if anything passes her exacting standards!
