White winter coat?

I've been looking for a winter coat (north face) and have found a bargain in my size, but it's white.

Aside from the practicality of the colour, which I'm not too worried about, is a white coat a massive style faux pas?
Two of my friends have used the 'ch*v' word to describe white winter coats.

Should I pay more and go for a dark green?

Hmmm, must admit white padded coats does conjure up a Chav image!

I have just bought a white gilet

I fully intended buying the black one, but I tried it on and it looked a bit meh. I then saw the white/cream coloured one and tried that on and it really suited me.

I'm hoping to pull it off...

Oh I don't know. I think white is fine. Can be kind of snow-queen-ish. Esp if it's a bargain!

Meant to add, I don't see a problem to be honest with a white coat, I'd just make sure that I had bright accessories.

I was hoping to style out the white one as I have olive skin, black hair and green eyes and the colour would suit me.

I'm a size 10-12 if that has any bearing on the answer!

Jemima For some reason a gilet doesn't evoke the same 'chav' responses in people I know. Maybe because there is less white material? I don't know!
I nearly ordered it until my friends said this.

If I get a good response on here I'll go for it and stick two fingers up at my hater friends!

I'd only buy a white cat if it was machine washable.

But when I watch QVC (the height of style/chic home shopping) the white/winter white coats always sell out in all sizes.
That might be enough to put you off.
