ankle boots if you're short and dumpy?

I'm short (bit under 5 foot) and norky (30G). In autumn/winter I like to wear dresses and for many years have fallen back on trusted knee high boots which help my legs look longer and prevent dumpiness! This year I really fancy trying ankle boots but am paranoid about looking dumpy. Is there anyone out there who's short and top-heavy and has found an ankle boot that works? A small heel (preferably a wedge) is OK but can't be too high as I need to do a fair amount of walking.

Lace up ones are the only thing that works with a dress, if your short, so you can make them flow neatly into tights or leggings.

Very hard to find.

Zip ankle boots that flap about with a gap at the top make me look very dumpy indeed. Thankyou M&S for making all your boots looser so I can't even wear them with trousers.

You might be right Star. I remember wearing Victorian style lace-up boots as a teenager (when I was short but much less norky) and they did look good but I was a size 8 then, so didn't have to worry about dumpiness. So are ankle boots just a no no if you're really short as they cut you off?

I think you're going to really struggle with this, you'll have to wear black tights (if you wear black boots), otherwise the change in colour will make your legs look shorter, and as Star says any gapes or bumps again will cut your leg, therefore appearing to shorten your leg. I think the longer boots will give a more streamline look.

I'm 5ft2 & a 34F and I wear ankle boots with dresses and skirts all the time. I could look awful but I really don't think I do. Might be cause my legs are skinny despite the rest of me not being!

I always wear with opaque tights - usually black, I wear heeled chelsea boots, wedges and the topshop pistol-a-likes. Personally have always preferred ankle boots to knee boots as they always make me feel like principal boy.

I would try to get ones where the bit around the ankle is cut into a v shape - I think this would elongate the look a bit. these are quite hard to find though.
