People who dress their kids in Boden are socially insecure?

Hi all

Did any of you see the Times article that said the people who dress their kids in Boden are socially insecure? Did you think the author was right?

Some of the alternatives made me laugh, if I put DS in Bonpoint, he'll get pasta sauce on it and I'll cry. Plus I can't get the website to work.

Have liked some of the stuff on ilovegorgeous though.

I buy from Boden as it doesn't involve taking children to shops. Plus all the clothes fit my children as they don't cut them for the plus size of the primary world (Tesco jeans, I am talking of you).

Oh - and most importantly, because I live in Cornwall, land of cuteness and 3 shops. What is Bonpoint?? Genuinely I have never clapped eyes on one. Are they mythical?

I'm trying to think what the author means by 'social insecurity' and I'm guessing it's that funny kind of middle class obsession with position they are referring to so maybe Boden is a marker of it, it's a very middle class brand. If you are a member of the aristocracy then you don't care because you are secure at the top and the truly poor can't afford to worry about brands. Even those who flash their cash are trying to say something different. Whereas Boden is very much part of the same level of society as MN, it's a little bit old fashioned (no flashing icons here, we all can write in proper sentences etc) but part of the establishment (What other parenting forum got to quiz all the party leaders last election?).

So yes, it is a marker of 'social insecurity'/middle-class values in the same way that juding people by their books/wine choice/TV viewing is. I still dress the kids in it though, I live in a small northern town with not much choice. Thank goodness for the internet.

Sconset, I've noticed that. The skirts/dresses are too short for older girls, where they used to be on the generous size.

What if you have the odd thing from Boden but you are a bit embarrassed by it? My dd has a nice coat from there and I was mortified when somebody recognised it as Boden. I feel like people might guess I was on mumsnet, wonder why I pay more than I need to have to for a child's coat, wonder why such a quintessentially English brand appeals to an Irish person........ who has to pay 6.50 stg for the privilege of having the goods delivered All in all, just potentially embarrassing really. So, what does that say about me?

I don't buy much from Boden any more as I do find it expensive. However it is very good quality and lasts for years as hand-me-downs. I also agree with the poster who said at least it is different from pink, Disney and Hello Kitty. My children always receive compliments when they are wearing Boden stuff.

I dress my dd in some Boden I bought second hand from my friend with an older dd1. Does that give me hand me down social insecurity? Wink

I always shop in end of season sale boden and get stuff that's far too big so she can grow in. I prefer it to any of the high street stores, though I do shop in next but marks and Spencer's is too pink!! The quality and style of boden in my opinion is better. Like a previous poster said the cord dresses last years and wash very well. The jeans are great too. They are normal jeans compared to the skinny jeans on offer in most shops now for 2 year olds! I can only afford to do their sale though bit if I could afford it I would get everything from there. I could definitely tell if a t shirt was from boden or primark. Ive never had anything from primark that lasted beyond 2 washes without looking washed out and stretched.

I've been really lucky and given tons of clothes for dd to wear for years to come. So the very few items of clothes I buy for her I can spend a bit more on - so a Boden outfit and a frugi outfit which have worn brilliantly and which I love because I chose them rather than someone else.

I'm not socially insecure - I like nice things.

When dd goes to nursery I think I might need several changes of clothes a day for her - which is where sainsburys will come in. I won't see her, and will want her dressed in clothes I don't care about.

Hamwidgeandcheps · 06/08/2013 21:06

I wonder what brands of clothes supposedly make you look so I ally secure?

I love Boden clothes.

HarrietSchulenberg · 06/08/2013 21:09

Don't know about socially insecure but I like Boden children's stuff because it's hard wearing and doesn't look like the nasty stuff in Asda.
