People who dress their kids in Boden are socially insecure?

Hi all

Did any of you see the Times article that said the people who dress their kids in Boden are socially insecure? Did you think the author was right?

Some of the alternatives made me laugh, if I put DS in Bonpoint, he'll get pasta sauce on it and I'll cry. Plus I can't get the website to work.

Have liked some of the stuff on ilovegorgeous though.

I buy some each year for my kids. rugged, nice quality, age appropriate and for style i think one gets nicer items for the price. i am in the states and only need to look around the nordstrom childrens' department to directly compare it to other brands considered on par, and think it compares favorably. also i don't drag my children shopping for clothes if at all possible. online ordering in sales is best, followed by blitzing consignment sales.

Scruffey · 05/08/2013 12:16

Love Boden stuff! Do not care what anyone thinks about my kids' attire. I like it and so do they.

You don't have to go shopping, it arrives in perfect condition with no tags to cut. It tumble dries well, it fits my skinny ds, if you buy their basic items with a good discount code or in the sale then it is not too expensive, it never wears out or breaks and if you don't like it you just post it back for free.

Author just stirring re social insecurity. Lots of journalists are little more than trolls these days

PlatinumStart · 05/08/2013 14:43

I buy Boden for my DCs because I don't like my DD1 (8) looking like a teen or my DS1 looking like a mini thug which is a difficult to avoid consequence of shopping at many other high street stores (next post 5 years particularly bad IMO)

The quality is also good and it's cheery. So much preferable to endless sludge colourd boys clothes or ridiculous sparkly princess girls stuff from elsewhere.

Levantine · 05/08/2013 14:48

I bought Boden for my pfb baby ds but I now think a lot of their stuff is really twee. I think Lands End is much better actually - for boys anyway. Lovely colours, really good quality, really good sales.

BuggedByJake · 05/08/2013 14:56

I think people who are socially insecure or wanting other people to notice their kids clothes would be buying more expensive or in your face branded clothing.

I buy Boden because I like it & it's a reasonable price when using discount codes. I do notice the difference between Boden & somewhere like primark but I don't care if other people are aware of what brands my dcs are wearing.

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 05/08/2013 22:13

turning from Boden towards Bonpoint is a mammoth leap pricewise, a bit like going from Primark to LKBennett for an adult this

I buy Boden for my children, the plainer stuff, often in the sale, always with a discount. It's good quality, washes well, can be handed down, not covered in princesses/cars/camouflage print. And when I first started buying children's clothes, you could order online, which was handy for like, people with an actual job.
Also, their longer leg skinny jeans fit my tall, thin daughters, whereas you could probably fit all three kids in a pair from Primark Grin

Boden women's wear is awful though.

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 05/08/2013 22:14

I like John Lewis boys wear but the girls stuff is a bit pink and twee.

CruCru · 05/08/2013 23:09

I checked out Bonpoint - there was a baby cardigan for £88. I don't think I can justify that. However, I can get away with buying quite a lot of Boden (prob get four or five things for £88).

I adore Boden T-shirts on my boys the colours, motifs, sweet and I really struggle to find similar on the high street. Our local M&S chose is dull and M&S have an obsession with Thomas the Tank!!! Move on M&S. Next love dark, sculls and some terrible fashions for little men.

I buy loads in the sale & 2nd hand - If I buy new then usually I sell on e-bay.

daimbardiva · 06/08/2013 10:41

This is hilarious, honestly. I buy Boden for my kids because I love the designs, it doesn't have naff or offensive slogans on it, and it is really hard wearing. My 2 yo dd has 3 pairs of gorgeous boden cords which I got on Ebay for approx £3 each and they're the most used and hardwearing items in her wardrobe; they look great and are practical too. Likewise, I've bought 2nd hand boden trousers for my ds and they are fab too.

Each to their own, eh?!

Elsiequadrille · 06/08/2013 10:46

I agree with whoever said that the socially insecure would perhaps buy more expensive clothing, and more identifiable designer wear. Like juicy couture, monnalisa, Lauren or some such.

TheYamiOfYawn · 06/08/2013 11:15

My kids mostly wear H&M, but DS hates the feel of anything other than soft pull-up trousers and it's hard to find trousers other than tracksuit bottoms which are comfortable enough. Boden consistently sell warm, hardworking comfortable trousers with elasticated waists.

justasecond · 06/08/2013 11:57

I went into a Bonpoint "outlet" shop once and almost fainted at the prices, £80 for baby trousers! There were plenty of people buying stuff though, mainly tourists.
I buy lots of Boden for my dc because it is good quality and reasonably priced with discount codes. I also buy lots for dds in Zara and recently in Massimo Dutti sale. For Ds I also like JL and Next for trousers.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 06/08/2013 12:29

Who on earth spends £88 on one item of clothing for a child?

Those people are far more insecure than those putting their kids in Boden, surely?

My boys wear a lot of Boden. It is brightly coloured and has no horrid slogans on it, it washes well. What's not to like? They also wear a lot of Sainsbury's.

Elsiequadrille · 06/08/2013 12:36

I sometimes buy Bonpoint and I'm not socially insecure. Nobody would know it was from Bonpoint, it's so plain and understated (but very good quality).

Empress77 · 06/08/2013 12:44

Weve heard that the boden snowsuits are the best and warmest ever so are awaiting them to come back in and get our winter snow suit from them. Boden do seem to make a good effort with their ethical policy which is a major plus for me, but I havent even looked at their childrens clothes yet, I imagine they are expensive & I expect Ill be getting most stuff from random places. So maybe Im just socially insecure in the snow.

Sleepwhenidie · 06/08/2013 12:46

Elsie it was Boden that signified social insecurity (apparently), Bonpoint puts you into a whole other category (that I can't remember) Grin

Elsiequadrille · 06/08/2013 12:51

sleep I was responding to Alibaba's post, that said that buying it [Bonpoint] was far more insecure than Boden.

cathpip · 06/08/2013 12:52

I buy Boden, but I also buy from sainsbury/John Lewis/ next etc. I also only buy my dc's clothes in the sales and then store them for the following season.

Fifilosttheplot · 06/08/2013 13:02

Arf....the Mini Boden catalogue dropped through the door this morning. I havent had one before and dont know where they got my name from [looks suspiciously at Mumsnet]

Am now wondering if just opening it will make me socially insecure about being socially insecure

AppleYumYum · 06/08/2013 13:32

How ridiculous, I have seen a lot of Mums dressing their children to impress and that usually involves D&G, Gucci, Ralph Lauren etc and it is normally glittery, leopard print etc. That is what I call socially insecure like driving a massive Range Rover. It is obvioulsy out there and designer. I don't find M&S or John Lewis to be much cheaper than Boden.

I buy a lot of Boden stuff for my ds and for me, I don't give a crap what anyone thinks. I also never pay full price - discount codes and in the sales, and hate trawling the shops. I just like their look as well, boyish but not too out there, nice prints and especially like the pull up jeans and cords without buttons or those annoying elastic tightening things. If I had a girl I would definitely buy even more from Boden as I hate overly pink, glittery, hello kitty, stuff.

Sometimes if you pay peanuts you get monkeys. The fact is that it is very well made, nice thick cotton, easy to wash and lasts. My ds is wearing a lot of things way past the age range, and he's not small for his age, so I also like that the sizing isn't small. I'd rather spend a few pounds more and get a lot of wear out of something than cheap stuff that stretches, bobbles and the stitching comes apart etc after two wears and ends up being my ds spare sets of clothes in his nursery bag...

KristinaM · 06/08/2013 14:39

I dress my boys from Hand M. I'm pleased to learn from this thread that this is because I'm loaded and have nothing to prove. Rather than that I'm too mean to pay for Boden Wink

Sconset · 06/08/2013 14:59

I buy far fewer items fromboden these days simply becauuse they have very few plain items- I won't buy tops with pictures/appliques all over thefront.
Skirts/dresses are too short too for older girls- my 7yo is in 9-10nfor length but buried chest-wise!

Gingersnap88 · 06/08/2013 15:42

Weird article.

I buy boden for DD because I like the clothes. I buy them all second hand on eBay or in the sales. I like the colours, they are practical, no logos, nice fabrics and not too gendered.

Never thought of myself as socially insecure, she equally wears things from Asda, Mothercare and John Lewis Grin

Gingersnap88 · 06/08/2013 15:43

Oh and
