People who dress their kids in Boden are socially insecure?

Hi all

Did any of you see the Times article that said the people who dress their kids in Boden are socially insecure? Did you think the author was right?

Some of the alternatives made me laugh, if I put DS in Bonpoint, he'll get pasta sauce on it and I'll cry. Plus I can't get the website to work.

Have liked some of the stuff on ilovegorgeous though.

Elsie-I would say that Boden is more expensive than most high street shops; Next, Marks and Spencer, Primark, H&M etc are all cheaper.

Elsiequadrille · 04/08/2013 16:10

Bonpoint is very plain, understated clothing, really good quality. I like the Miller brand too (Elias and Grace brand), which I think is fairly similar but slightly cheaper.

WitchOfEndor · 04/08/2013 16:11

I think he is probably right if the parents are purely buying Boden because they think that will affect how other people view them. But how many people do that? I do buy Boden, but usually wait till there is an offer on as I usually don't spend that much on something that's going to be grown out of so quickly. I also shop in Primark, Tesco, Asda, M&S, Mothercare, Next, H&M etc depending on what they have in.

Arisbottle · 04/08/2013 16:12

Thanks Colditz, I suspected as much. Grin

Thyeternalsummer · 04/08/2013 16:13

I buy Boden because I like the quality and wonderful range of fabric prints they have for kids.

I don't care whether anyone knows whether it's Boden or not. Except as a way of identifying other mothers with similar interest in clothes etc. My friend and I at uni were able to identify the clothing brand of anyone walking into the uni bar (small city with few clothes shops), and I still like noticing people wearing an item from X company's collection. Loved it when my DP worked on Rue du Rhône in Geneva and I could spot the fashion cover items in the shop windows...last May's Sienna Cèline dress was in the store window for quite a while.

colditz · 04/08/2013 16:14

I have an irrational hatred of "negative messages" on t shirts, which sometimes makes it very hard to buy clothes for my boys! I had a bitch fit in M and Co last year, all the boys t shirts had the equivalent of "I'm an aggressive little turd" written on them, all the girls tops had the equivalent of "value me for my looks, it's all ill ever care about" written on them and I saw red.

This year ..... This year I think they may have taken notice of the complaints they got last year. It's all faded skulls, moustaches and butterflies.

IAmTheTwelfthDoctor · 04/08/2013 16:15

Boden is expensive IMO (not designer prices, but more than high street). But I only buy it in the sales or second hand, and I do it because the children's stuff is good quality and wears very well.

AmberNectarine · 04/08/2013 16:17

I buy Boden for my kids because it is cute, durable and colourful. There are no borderline slutty designs in the girls range. I buy a bit of Next for DS, but he does tend to go through the knees of the jeans quickly, and while I liked a lot of the baby range for DD, now she is getting bigger there is a lot of glitter, unecessary frills and 'mummy's little princess' motif kind of crap. Sainsburys do an excellent children's range however - nice bright design, logo free and washes well. I don't really give a fuck what people think of what my kids wear, they like it and I am happy with it. DS loves his Boden t-shirt with a big prawn design!

Elsiequadrille · 04/08/2013 16:18

Oh, I thought it must be similar price to Next, but wasn't sure. Though now you say it, I can only think of Brora as being more expensive high street, and perhaps Monsoon on a par.

There's always discount codes for Boden, though. You'd be silly not to use them. I don't know anybody who pays full price.

ClaraOswald · 04/08/2013 16:19

Bonpoint charge £88 for a shirt for a boy wearing age 6 clothes.

Fucking hell. I spent that amount on pretty much a whole summer wardrobe for my nephew.

AnnoyingOrange · 04/08/2013 16:27

I've never bought from Boden. I prefer to feel the fabric before I buy

Having must looked at the boys clothes online I think it's a bit young for my teenagers

LondonNinja · 04/08/2013 16:28

Haven't read the article but think the author is talking twaddle.

Who, really, gives a fuck?! (Apart from the author?)

FrozenNorthPole · 04/08/2013 16:29

I buy it, all three children wear it, then I sell it on. The amount of money actually lost in this process = minimal. Nice clothes. Not covered in princesses or Disney crap. Don't see the problem.

Iggity · 04/08/2013 16:35

For every day wear, I dress my son mainly in Boden as they do nice clothes for boys. That's about the height of it. No more thought or reason attached to it.

cornypepper · 04/08/2013 16:36

I buy depending on what they like and what suits their build.

my ds2 likes the colours Boden use - especially the camo pants.
Boden have trousers in bigger sizes with no fastenings which is another plus for my ds. They are also a wider fit than M&S and NEXT.
The PJ's last till they grow out of them and don't fade or bobble.
I rarely pay full price as they do really good offers.

I like GAP kids stuff as well but I love a bargain and their sales aren't as good (and the p&p isn't free)

DS1 always wore NEXT as he's a skinny build but I never go in there now as it doesn't fit ds2 as well.

cornypepper · 04/08/2013 16:37

ds2 is currently wearing an ALDI superman t-shirt though...does that mean I'm socially secure then?

IsisOhIsis · 04/08/2013 16:38

I buy most of dd's clothes second hand. She has a fair bit of boden stuff because its bright, cute, childish (i.e. I'm dressing my 2yo like a 2yo not a 12yo) and I think they do some really nice stuff. Plus I can resell and pretty much make my money back when she's grown out of it. I buy loads of other brands as well, I don't buy it because its boden in the hope that other people will notice and think I'm a yummy mummy. (they would only have to glance in my direction to realise I'm not Grin )

orangeandemons · 04/08/2013 16:40

Well for older girls, Boden, John Lewis and Sainsbury's are the only places I'll get clothes from. Next and m and s older girls stuff is horrible. Clothes for teenagers and too much polyester

bunnymother · 04/08/2013 16:46

My DDs have a couple of Boden items (silver leather ballets and a few plain cardis). It's not a brand I am especially drawn to, both because I don't really like the look of most of it and also because Johnny Boden's comments on women have annoyed me. I'm surprised that anyone would genuinely think others would choose their children's clothing due to social insecurity. But maybe there are some such people. Does seem odd, but I guess we all have our foibles and worries.

VelmaDaceDinkley · 04/08/2013 16:48

If you can afford to shop at Boden and genuinely like their clothes then there's nowt wrong with that.

If you're skint but getting into debt to buy clothes from there purely to maintain a certain image then yes, you're probably a twat.

Sleepwhenidie · 04/08/2013 18:01

I'm sorry but turning from Boden towards Bonpoint is a mammoth leap pricewise, a bit like going from Primark to LKBennett for an adult, to suggest that lots of people are doing that is crazy.

It's just a fluff piece in a style supplement, I don't think you are meant to take it too seriously Wink.

MarianneEnjolras · 04/08/2013 18:09

I like the quality and the fit of Boden clothes for myself and ds. I only buy in the sale though as it's so expensive. I'm so socially secure that I don't care what anyone else thinks of my shopping habits.

Incidentally, I'm boycotting Next as although it's the only place (other than Boden) where I can buy trousers that fit me perfectly, I dislike the fact that the pair of Next jeans I bought ten years ago are still going strong when Next clothes I bought only last year have fallen apart. Hmm Has anyone else noticed this?

cloudskitchen · 04/08/2013 18:09

I used to buy Boden for my kids when they were little as it looked cute. They are older now and although Boden still cater to their age groups they have grown out of the look.

Nothing to do with being socially insecure as I am far from it. I just liked the stuff which is the one of the 2 reasons I buy anything. I buy a thing because I either like it or need it. Hopefully a combination like and need) Wink

Marylou2 · 04/08/2013 18:10

I buy Boden for myself and DD as I am basically lazy. Can't be arsed to trawl the high street or even the Internet for clothes when I can lie on the sofa with a glass of wine and order from Boden. Clothes are well made, reasonably priced if you use the discounts. Free delivery and returns and top notch customer service. If some idiot columnist considers me socially insecure well it won't be the worst thing that's ever happened to me.

AndTwoBits · 04/08/2013 18:13

I love their little girl clothes. They are proper little girls clothes if that makes sense, not clothes an adult old wear but smaller! I usually buy sale only but am seriously considering buying a full price winter coat this year for eldest dd as she is starting school and needs something cosy and washes well. Boden stuff washes and washes.
