My arse would fail the pencil test.

I just don't get it. I'm not in bad shape; size 10, BMI 21, have a very active lifestyle, lots of walking, squats, lunges, cycling etc. But no matter what I do, the bum stays resolutely saggy. Is it an age thing (am 39)? Or a genetically determined body shape issue? If anyone can tell me a non-surgical way to lift the old arse a couple of cms off the back of my thighs, I will buy them a pint. Honest.

Some of it is to do with posture. If you stand with your hips tilted slightly under & forward, and sit your trunk back into your hips (extremely common), your ass will sag down. Your ass muscles will also push the fat underneath your bum, at the top of your thighs, outwards. This creates a wide flat bottom.
If you stand properly then your bum will automatically lift. Standing properly means

  • standing tall, as if a thread ran from your coccyx to the crown of your head and pulled straight up to the ceiling
  • lifting your trunk out of your hips
  • engaging your core
  • pulling your shoulders back and down

Really hard to explain. I can post good and bad posture pics to my profile if that would help?

I have a DVD which is a killer on the bum and legs, by Joey Atlas. You do a few different kinds of squats plus various other leg/hip exercises, but all done slowly and with control, which seems to make them more painful effective.

No music or grinning acolytes either, which some like and some hate, but rare times I've perservered they've been pretty effective.

Some good stuff to be going on with here, thanks guys. Pints all round!!

Btw, I don't mind having a big bum at all, it is just the sagginess I can't stand. Some of those women on Holla's link look incredible!

Just looked at the bulgarian split squat. On the video I saw the woman's knees go over her toes, something I've been told is REALLY BAD (I've had 3 knee ops and lots of physio) so be careful if you are doing them to keep good form!

I'm really fat but have a really high, pert bum...genes probably?

I think playing tennis helps, if you do it actively ( not the feet of clay version). My bum muscles hurt after a lesson!

Also, brisk walking

Actually , forgeddit... Just failed the pencil test

But fuck it, who cares, in my mind I look good Wink
