Has anyone seen any nice dresses or skirts for AW suitable for SAHM?

I have been mostly wearing skinny jeans and jumpers for the last few Winters but am a little bored of this look now.
I am after a dress or two or possibly a skirt and a dress.

I need something that works for days at home with the children.
Fitted style
Neutral colour, maybe navy or grey, maybe even red. Could be floral or some sort of subtle pattern but not too Bodenesque!
The sort of thing that can be layered with a top underneath and a cardigan over top.

Was wondering about some sort of pleated skirt but no idea where to look.
Knee length or just above/ below.

Has anyone seen anything like this or alternatively if you can give me some inspiration for AW outfits not involving jeans that are comfortable and work for running around after small DC but also attractive and stylish that would be great.

Bumping for you because I'm in the same boat Smile

Have you looked at White Stuff? They have many lovely skirts which work well with a top and cardi combo.

BerryBlast · 03/08/2013 21:32

I quite like Seasalt, especially the ones that are made from bamboo (well, that's what it says on the website!!). Disclaimer - I am 49, so if they're too old fashioned, sorry Blush

scraggydoodledo · 03/08/2013 22:31

Thank you v much for the suggestions. I had a look at White Stuff but none of the skirts are drawing me in. There are one or two dresses at Seasalt that might be worth a try.

I guess I was thinking of something a bit less earthy and pretties but it is always hard to find a balance with small DC.

Denim?

Do you happen to be a 12?

Something like this?

I really like this

Or how about a jersey tube skirt?

toryalane · 04/08/2013 04:04

Yes, I second tube skirts. There are very comfy. There are loads about on the high street at the minute. You can pick them up cheaply on Ebay. EG

There are a few nice dresses in the Jaeger outlet that are knee length.

Chubfuddler · 04/08/2013 06:55

Boden's AW collection this year is a marked improvement on previous. Have a look you may be surprised.

madmomma · 04/08/2013 07:38

lurking for acceptable SAHM outfits also. I'm ashamed to say I still have my trust leggings seeing far too much wear. I am enjoying wearing some lovely teadresses though, and Gap legging jeans are my friend at the moment.

madmomma · 04/08/2013 07:39

chub I agree re the boden AW collection but the review thread is thrashing all the things I want!

madmomma · 04/08/2013 07:46

jam there are some lovely dresses there. I don't suppose you know what a jaeger L is do you?

Claxonia · 04/08/2013 08:27

Great Plains do some fairly stylish dresses that are also quite comfy.

JamEyelid · 04/08/2013 08:46

No sorry mad I have just been looking. Overspent last month so trying not to buy anything else. I will probably break soon though.

I looked at the size guide and it looks like it is size 14 - 16.

Paribus · 04/08/2013 09:44

Benetton- actually their sister company Sisley- has some really nice dresses in their shop on Oxford Circus. Can't find them online but really nice ones-one is black, straight but fitted, two small pockets on the front, 80% wool, 3/4 sleeves, 40 pounds- so might be worthwhile checking out. Now i must say that Benetton is not exactly my kind of shop since last thing i bought there was about ten years ago but was very impressed when wandered in a shop a couple days ago.

scraggydoodledo · 04/08/2013 11:29

Thank you for all those ideas. I like the look of the Topshop pleated skirt, Remus.

I had forgotten about Jaegar. They do have some really lovely looking dresses on that Outlet section. Quite a lot sold out in my size but a couple worth trying.

I like the Boden Hannah dress and maybe the Alexa too but too expensive at the moment.

I haven't shopped at Gt Plains in years either. Will look at them too.

madmomma- Can I ask where you bought your tea dresses from? I think I am probably after a tea dress or something similarly pretty.
I think a Jaegar L would be 14-16. I have tried Jaegar in the past and they tend to come up on the larger size.

I remember Sisley from when I was a teen. I didn't know they were still around!

Be careful with GP. The quality is not v good and a lot of the fabric is not v nice ime.

scraggydoodledo · 04/08/2013 11:41

Thanks for the tip Remus. I think Jaegar are normally v good quality so I may try them first.

Chubfuddler · 04/08/2013 11:56

Oh really? I haven't bought anything yet, having an expensive summer. That's a shame. Mind you I think whatever odd shape Boden designs for must be me because the reviews they are honest enough to put on the Boden site often criticise fit and I rarely have any problem.

I will look at the thread.

LadyMilfordHaven · 04/08/2013 13:20

oh god NOT white stuff , it is gopping

LadyMilfordHaven · 04/08/2013 13:22

how odd, the skater skirt wont open when i click on it, even if I go to TOpshop FIRST.

gah , i really like

QueenCadbury · 04/08/2013 13:45

remus I love that grey topshop one but what would you wear with it to stop you looking like an overgrown school girl? I have absolutely no idea how to style skirts.

Like you scraggy I'm a SAHM and looking to venture out of jeans so I'm following this thread with interest.

LadyMilfordHaven · 04/08/2013 14:40

A plain t IMO. Ckose fitting. It short sleeved jumper. Love them.

NonnaMai · 04/08/2013 14:56

Agree with remus about Great Plains. I've had some shocking dresses from them, really cheap fabric and badly made.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 04/08/2013 15:45

Tbh I probably WOULD look like an overgrown school girl, especially as I am told that I look like her (thanks dds and friends!).

Erm...probably just a black cami and a biker jacket, plus heeled ankle boots. Or, in sunny weather, just a black cami and Converse or ballet shoes, I guess.
