dresses for broad shoulders

has anyone any suggestions? i have tried so many 'tea' type dresses in my size and they all fit apart from around the shoulders where they are almost always too tight. that latest one is lovely and a size 16, fits perfectly everywhere but too tight around shoulders. an 18 would be too big everywhere else!

Have exactly the same problem. I avoid anything which tries to be fitted around the shoulders as it's either too tight round shoulders (to suit my inconsequential bust) or too loose and gapey round bust (if my shoulders are going to be comfy). the only option I have is to wear sleeveless dresses. I feel this takes the eye away from my shoulders and is at least comfy. wintertime I wear sleeveless dresses (think shift dresses) with a long sleeve top underneath.

Hope someone has some better advice as I would love to wear more floaty summer dresses. Dont even get me started on spaghetti straps... the vast savannah of my flat chest and broad man shoulders is just too much.. Shock

Sometimes all you can do is buy the bigger size, and just take it in a bit by putting a couple of darts in the top and taking in the waist.

it such a pain as the last dress i got only comes up to size 16 and i love it so much :( shame I can't make it bigger

I'm broad shouldered and tend towards sleeveless as well. If youre going for sleeves then a raglan sleeve is meant to be more flattering.
As with mingingintherain I wear long sleeved thin tops underneath for the winter or thin cardies.

Low V neck is good as well as it 'breaks up' the broad shoulder area.

Nothing too thick or textured, darker plainer tops with brighter/lighter bottoms, no puff sleeves or bat wings or anything that widens your top half like stripes. It's a hard body shape to dress in my opinion.

Oh and cowl necks are meant to be flattering but I can't get my head around them!

yes my favourite dress is a v neck wrap one in jersey so it stretches probably to fit my shoulders!

thanks celestial that's quite interesting - will look out for those features
