Why does my hair hurt?!?

HappySmileyFace · 25/07/2013 10:49

I used to wear my hair down quite a bit. My youngest likes to grab my hair so have been wearing it up as a result for the past year.

Whenever I have it in a ponytail, it hurts my head. I get headaches and the actual hair sort of hurts.

I have been forced to wear it in a french braid and just hope I don't run into anyone I know

It makes me feel look really old! This style doesn't hurt my head.

I am going back to work next week so have to look presentable. My french braid style isn't going to cut it!

Any ideas why a ponytail might be causing me pain?

Don't know but I get this too! Its like the hair doesnt want to be pulled in the opposite direction to the way it normally grows...

shaggyrogers · 25/07/2013 10:53

Do you pull the ponytail too tight?

jimblejambles · 25/07/2013 10:54

Could be you pull your hair too tight when you are putting the ponytail up. Or if its a high ponytail and you have thick or long hair it could be pulling.

bigTillyMint · 25/07/2013 10:55

I used to get this when I wore my extremely thick and long hair in a tight ponytail all the time. It's much better now it is shorter and layered.

Thank you - and good to know I am not alone Keztrel - yes it is exactly like the hair doesn't want to go a certain direction and I will pay the price for trying!

Maybe I am pulling it too tight. I think I will get a few inches cut off as it has gotten quite long and maybe the weight of it will make a difference.

Happens to me I have very thick and long hair. I usually do a french braid but sideways tied low on the neck, which is a little bit better!

Thanks blueberry Just watched that clip (that girls hair is shiny!). Tried to recreate but clearly need more practice at the side french braid!

I have had this happen and I have fine hair. It was when I had been wearing it up every day and then wanted to wear it down but my hair didn't like it and kept wanting to go the other direction. After a while of wearing my hair in a low ponytail rather then high my hair adjusted and now feels fine in ponytail or down.

oreoaddict · 25/07/2013 11:52

I get this. Hats give me headaches too Confused I get the sore scalp and hair when I wear a tight, high ponytail, but when I wear it low, it just doesn't suit me.

It's bizarre, but thought I was the only one Grin

I've swapped to the elastic hair ties that are tied in a knot and flatter rather than traditional hair bobbles. Bought mine from eBay. They allegedly stop any marks in your hair when you put it down again. I am a bit Sad at that claim but they do stop the pain a bit. Will try and link hang on.
