How can I soften new shoes?

I've just bought new ballet flats from Clarks for work but the leather is really hard around the edges of them. Is there a way to soften them so they feel more comfy?

I take mine to the cobbler for softening

Thanks Catherine I had thought maybe something like that.

Jenny what does the cobbler do to them? I didn't know they did that.

Take a hammer to them! I do this quite often to the backs of shoes to soften them up.
