Looking for retro style clothes

catgirl1976 · 28/06/2013 13:56

I have decided to go for a whole new look

I want to get a new look that is a little bit 40s retro with maybe a hint of burlesquey, gothness. Sort of retro pin up IYSWIM

I am looking at Hell Bunny and Spin Doctor but the quality doesn't look great and I am too old for full on gothness (am an ex one Grin )

I am a size 12 and very old 36

If anyone has any good recommendations I would be so greatful

Years of just buying generic shit has left me feeling I have no personal style :( or knowing where to start to look

50s is a lot easier to find than 40s, but there is some about. like most repro brands Hell bunny is generally more 50s inspired but they have a few wiggle dresses that can just about pas for 40s. the quality is fine.

tara starlet, particularly the sweetheart dress and homefront dancing dress which beat the VoH 40s dress hands down, IMHO.
20th century foxy have a 40s page
collectief have a few bits that'd pass for 40s
Lindy Bop landgirl dresses look nice are nice but they're a heavy, clingy polyester.

Most of the trousers you'll see about use too much fabric to be properly 40s, depends how purist you are. These for example have a lovey 40s feel (to my mind) but they look like they've used almost a dresses worth of fabric which would absolutely never have happened. The Vivien of Holloway version are more like it.

For 40s shoes you'd need to be looking a t-bars, maybe mary janes. Very utilitarian.

Mac Ruby woo is the perfect suits-almost-everyone, utterly matte retro red lipstick.

Oh, and poppy, again, mostly 50's inspired but their Edith dresses would pass even thought the prints are a bit too 'fun'.

snoods
revival have quite a bit, although (again) a lot of the dresses use too much fabric
heyday too, mixed in with the 50s stuff

Grand!

I think I forgot to mention that some of the Lindy Bop wiggles are looking really pretty 40s. Love this one, their cotton stuff is decent quality for the price but I hate their polyester. Tara starlet is brilliant though. I think I forgot to link to this and thsi, was thinking more of everyday stuff.
