Can I wear Crocs in London?

I am off to the big city in a few weeks to watch a show at the theatre. I live in a small town in the Southwest where people are not seemingly bothered about being stylish and a lot of us live in Crocs.

Will I be laughed at? Is there an alternative to Crocs? I cannot imagine anything else would be as comfy.

Personally i wouldn't wear crocs to the threatre, whether it's in London or anywhere else but don't buy anything specially, unless you really want to!
Which theatre are you going to? a small pub-like one or something smarter?

LoriGrimes · 19/06/2013 14:39

I think it's the Drury lane theatre. We are seeing Charlie and the chocolate factory.

I don't think Crocs are appropriate footwear for anywhere the theatre, I don't think you have to be super smart or anything - a pair of comfy flats, sandals or plimsolls would be fine.

NigellasGuest · 19/06/2013 14:43

oh you will be fine. It's not like it used to be. If you were keen on shoes etc you could use it as an excuse to buy a new pair, but no you will not be laughed at. It's not like you're going to a Gala night at Covent Garden or something. The place will be full of families & kids etc to see oompa loompas or whatever!!

Theas18 · 19/06/2013 14:43

Of course you can! You can wear crocs anywhere, especially to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - Willy Wonka fashion inc would have designed them if noone else had LOL

burberryqueen · 19/06/2013 14:44

no you cannot wear Crocs to the theatre!!!!!!

MerylStrop · 19/06/2013 14:44

Do you own anything other than Crocs?
What will you be wearing on the rest of you? (worried emoticon)
Really, crocs are only suitable for under 11s

101handbags · 19/06/2013 14:44

I agree with the above - I wouldn't wear Crocs to go to the theatre in London. People do, however, wear prettty much anything - there is no dress code - but on the whole it's sort of smart casual - so jeans, but smart jeans, maybe ballet flats or nice sandals. Enjoy the show & your trip to London.

Excellent. This is great news. Thank you answering

to a Charlie and the Chocolate Factory matinee - I'm sure you can have you seen the types coming out of that theatre lately

NigellasGuest · 19/06/2013 14:45

^ joke ^

megandraper · 19/06/2013 14:46

it's fine wearing crocs to the theatre, esp for a kids matinee. Not a problem at all.

LoriGrimes · 19/06/2013 14:46

Ah. Have just seen more replies so maybe not wear them then? I have quite clumpy feet so anything dainty would look even worse than the Crocs

OP posts:
NigellasGuest · 19/06/2013 14:48

kids matinee - no one cares except Hyacinth Bouquet types

LoriGrimes · 19/06/2013 14:48

MerylStrop the rest of me will no doubt be wearing something equally as tasteless. I thought an orange chiffon dress that has been hanging in my wardrobe for sometime and an old black baggy cardigan?

AintNobodyHereButUsKittens · 19/06/2013 14:49

You can. They won't frisk you at the door and throw you out. It's not an elegant theatre going look, but I imagine you knew that, and you may very well be the only adult wearing them, but presumably you won't know anyone there, or care what they think of you, so .... .

The one thing you absolutely mustn't do, is wear uncomfortable shoes that you can't walk a mile in. Now that really would screw up your day.

EarlyInTheMorning · 19/06/2013 14:50

You can wear what you like, it's London, innit

burberryqueen · 19/06/2013 14:51

have u not heard of the crack troops of croc police who tirelessly comb the capital for the offending articles?

BadSkiingMum · 19/06/2013 14:52

Checks the rules of London.

Crocs are not prohibited. :)

You will be fine! But keep your feet clear of the edge of the escalator, as apparently they protect your feet less well than ordinary shoes....

GiveMumABreak · 19/06/2013 14:52

No you cannot wear crocs to the theatre! Crocs an only be worn in your own garden to hang out the washing! Crocs.are.absolutely.awful. Enjoy the show x

bigTillyMint · 19/06/2013 14:57

Crocs to the theatre?

All us Londoners will point and shout "Bumpkin!"

dontyouwantmebaby · 19/06/2013 14:58

god yes of course you can wear crocs in London and to the theatre, people get less dressed up to go out than a lot of people outside London imagine, they really do!

I noticed this when I used to travel back frequently to the wee place I grew up in. People used to get so glammed up for anything and everything but in London anything goes, no-one cares or will look at you twice Grin

sheeparegorgeous · 19/06/2013 15:01

Well I agree the first thing in London is to have comfortable footwear.
But Crocs. Not a great look. Marginally less heinous and imo even more comfy are Skechers Go Walks. I have just got my first pair (in plain black) and with skinny jeans, a casual shirt/t-shirt and nice bag, kid myself I look almost 'on trend'. I feel far more stylish in them than my Crocs (which I wear round the house as slippers.)

burberryqueen · 19/06/2013 15:03

yeh they are kind of house or beach shoes really - didnt realise how gross they looked until recently.

GraduallyGoingInsane · 19/06/2013 15:17

It makes me sad that people don't dress up for the theatre any more! Call me a snob or a Hyacinth Bucket, but the theatre is special. I would feel so uncomfortable in Crocs - to me they are at best garden shoes, beach shoes, house shoes. Just like wellies are rainy walk shoes.

I wouldn't dream of wearing crocs, trainers etc to the theatre, and I wouldn't let my DDs. To me, it's disrespecting a cultural tradition - look what people used to wear to the theatre! The bare minimum for me would be tailored trousers, sandals or ballet pumps and a cardigan.
