Best Sunscreen to avoid prickley heat rash

DD 12 always gets prickly heat rash when we go abroad on holiday.

We are off to Spain in the school holidays and was wondering if anyone could recommend a sensitive suncreen but high factor (Spf 30 I am thinking) that may help avoid or aggrevate the heat rash.

My first thought is something from the Simple range but was wondering if anyone has had much success with anything else.

I've always suffered from prickly heat rash and it drives me mad! Over the years I've tried various suncreams and think the best are Tescos own and Garnier sensitive (which I'm currently using). You do need to keep re-applying though and it's worth giving skin a rest, ie sit in shade when you can, cover up with a light cotton blouse.

I used to get prickly heat all the time till I started using Ambre Solaire for sun sensitive skin. I use a spray rather than a cream as it's easier to rub in and so you don't irritate the skin as much. It comes in factor 40 and 50, not sure of there is 30.

Piz buin allergy suncream works for me. Used it for years now never had it since.

DS always gets prickly heat and suncream definitely aggravates it. We bought him one of those factor 50 t-shirts... Something like this and he was ok, although we were also really careful about making him spend time in the shade and smothered his shoulders (where the prickly heat usually affects him) in calamine lotion every evening after his shower.

I would second the Piz Buin Allergy - works for me.

A few people I know have sworn by taking anti-histamine tablets daily for a fortnight before you go.

Nivea suncream works for me.

I so wish I had seen this thread before going on holiday. I now have the worst prickly heat rash ever.

I assume that calamine lotion is now the way to go. Probably too late for the anti histamines but i will take those too.

Nivea works for me too. Soltan isn't too bad either.

Lucky that you are going to Spain as the best thing I have used for heat rash is this cream you can buy in Spain at the pharmacy. It is just called Allergical Cream and is in a white and blue stripes tube, but comes in a box. It is really cheap, a few euros. I put it on morning and evening on holiday and it really helps prevent it. I let it soak in well before applying my sun cream.

Years ago someone told me calcium supplements help, but haven't really tested that one.

Sun sense toddler milk is great. Also banana boat factor fifty spray is lovely.

Was in Tenerife in March - and used ultrasun spf 30. It seems pricey, but you only apply once a day so it lasts ages.

On the last day of our holiday I used a spray oil on my legs -which then were blotchy, itchy and a downright mess for a week after I got home.

You can buy it from QVC - or their own website. You can get it in Duty Free too - it is cheaper. I tried to buy more supplies this week on my return fromm Spain, but they were out of stock.

Ultrasun here too, you can get it from Waitrose and Ocado. It is expensive but I start buying a bottle with my weekly shopping every now and then around Easter and put them aside for the summer.

I use Clinique Sunscreen for dd as she gets awful prickly heat.

It does work, although its quite expensive.

A few people have said about anti histamines 2 weeks before so I think thats worth a try.

I recall getting very bad prickly heat in Corfu 22 years ago and seeing a local Dr who prescribed me calcium tablets. I can't honestly say they did anything.

I think I will go for a lighter lotion or milk instead of a thick gloopy lotion. I am sure the layering on of thick gunky stuff cannot help the skin to breathe.

Yes also to the taking an antihistamine daily, for 2 weeks before you go. My dr recommended this.

Can anyone recommend a facial sunblock? I'm OK with it on my body but last few holidays I've come home to bumpy dry skin on my face! Was away last week and Soltan Facial sunscreen has done the same

my ds gets a rash with all suncreams but la roche posay.

Ultrasun do a face version, I have extremely sensitive skin around my eyes and am fine with this.

Thanks whoknows - will have a look. Not sure if its prickly heat or not, no redness, just tiny raised bumps all over and random dry patches
