Highlights in reddish hair

My natural hair colour is a reddish mid-brown. I'm starting to get some greys around the front, and have failed to find a home dye that is a good match for my natural colour (I have only been brave enough to try semi-permanents). I also tried getting it dyed at the hairdresser, which was a disaster - much darker than my natural colour, with a hint of burgundy. I looked like a goth, and following advice on here promptly used colour b 4 to remove the dye.

A few months down the line and I'm feeling up to starting a new offensive against the greys. I am very pale, so going even slightly darker than my natural shade completely drains me. I have therefore concluded that lighter is the way forward.

Has anyone had highlights put in reddish hair? I've booked an appointment with a hairdresser who comes highly recommended (by a friend with lovely blonde hair!), but I'm not quite sure what to ask for. Caramel tones, maybe? I really want to avoid the "blonde streaks in red hair" look, and achieve something natural looking.

Hi, I similar hair colour with dreaded grey creeping in and have been having highlights for a year or so. I have light copper which compliments my colour without being brassy, to be honest you can't tell it's highlighted it just looks brighter.

Thanks Rosie, I think copper was what I was aiming for when I waved a picture of Amy Adams around asked the hairdresser to dye it (instead it went burgundy...), so copper highlights sound like the sort of thing I'm after. Does it cover your grey well?

It does cover the grey well and looks very natural, I made the mistake of having blonde the first time and it was terrible very striped. The brand of the colour is rusk deep shine and the colour is light copper, it stays true to colour for a long time and doesn't fade.
