What does 'smart casual' mean and some practical advice, please

So have an invite to a work related event at an ambassadors residence in London. Dress code is smart casual but what does that mean? And then need to find a suitably smart casual outfit that will survive being packed in a suitcase and not need ironing on arrival! Any pointers or advice gratefully received!!

Not jeans. Not suit either. Somewhere in between. Something with a collar if you are a man. You have a bit more choice if you're a woman.

Thanks for the reply. Yep that's my problem, I can do formal smart and casual but not the in-between. I have a couple of linen dresses which I think might do but they won't travel well!

This is why I hate the dress code "smart-casual". It tells you nothing you need to know . I always assume that for men it means suit, collar no tie. And for women something simple but not too dressed up. I think you're on the right track with the dress you linked to.

I would do a dress. But tone done with a blazer/ cardigan and nice shoes but not smart smart.

'Smart casual' is the work of the devil. Cardie too informal blazer likely too be too formal. 1/2 or 3/4 sleeves is always a good option, as someone else here said, it's wise to assume any event will be 18 degrees.

Yes I was thinking dress but would likely stray more into the formal work style. I have a navy shift dress that I think would work with the right shoes and jacket. Thanks again for the advice!

I think I'd rather go too smart than too casual though!
