Help! stained my nails with nail varnish

Yes, I know, I should be using a base coat. But I didn't. And 5 days later when I removed the bright turquoise varnish I look like I'm vaguely ill!

Any tips? Do I just need to wear dark nail varnish (with a base coat!!) for the forseeable future?

I've heard that rubbing whitening toothpaste on them helps. Don't know how well it works but it's worth a try!

ooh I was going to mention toothpaste - think it's got to be the whitening version.
