How to stretch leather shoes

I got an absolute bargain yesterday at a local table sale - a pair of beautiful Camper leather wedge shoes worn once - they're immaculate and cost £4!

They are a little tight across the top - how can I stretch them without fucking them up?

I've read about wet newspaper, filling food bags with water and freezing and sticking a peeled potato into them, but just wondered if anyone has actually tried anything like that, if it worked, or what worked best for you.

I normally put a pair of thick socks on, ram the shoes on and walk around the house. Does the trick but is probably not the recommended process!

They might be a bit pricey but the wooden shoe stretchers off amazon work really really well. I did try the spray first but it only really worked on suede and not on thick leather for me. I also tried the kettle and brush handle and all the cheap/free stuff first.
