Numbering on box hair dyes!

Can any hairdressers (or anyone else!) explain the numbering system on boxes of hair dye for me please? Confused I've noticed different brands often have similar numbers. If I want to be a very light golden blonde, do the numbers relate to lightness and/or amounts of red in the dye? Is a 9.2 lighter than a 9.3 for example. It's very confusing.

from a bit of googling 9 is the base colour and runs from 1 (black) to 10 (or higher) for blonde. The number after the '.' gives the primary tone of the colour so 9.2 is blonde with a violet tone and 9.3 is blonde with a gold tone.

Ah, you found something! Thanks. I googled and came up with nothing enlightening. No pun intended!
