Bra intervention - have I got this right?

Wenchelda · 06/05/2013 14:02

Hi - I'm new, hope its ok to come straight on with a question....I Somehow stumbled across one of the bra intervention threads a couple of weeks ago and have been following them in amazement ever since.

I've always worn an A cup (32/34 pre pregnancy, currently 36A) - never been measured professionally but always done it myself based on the "add 4 or 5 inches" rule. I have pretty much constant back ache and neck pain but never ever imagined this could be caused by boobs as they really are so tiny!

But after reading your fascinating threads, I think I should be a 30/32D! My measurements are 31 under bust, 35 at fullest point when bending over to 90 degrees, and 34 above. Have I got that right? If so I am truly truly in shock that my almost-not-there boobs are a D!!

Thanks

Remeasure both band and dangling and let us know!

EdwiniasRevenge · 26/06/2013 11:05

Thanks.

Tbf debenhams did measure me as a 34C (not gorgeous range though). I feel that they are too loose. I am goig in store so will try a variety. Just helpful to know the starting point

sparkle12mar08 · 26/06/2013 11:07

Are you sure about the 34 underbust? Debs usually do the outdated +4 technique. Measure yourself underbust pulled tight and over bust on the dangle before you go, and let us know what they are.

ComfortablyDumb · 26/06/2013 11:43

Can I join too please? I definitely haven't been wearing the right bra since having the dc, over 3 years ago Blush

I've just measured as 37/45 Prior to dc wore a 36A/B. Although who knows if that was right either (and am now hugely a wee bit more tubby than I was then too)

sparkle12mar08 · 26/06/2013 12:34

37/45 gives you a starting point of 36G ComfortablyD So try 36G & GG, and 38FF and G. Given that you're inbetween band sizes you'll probably want to size down to the 36's. They will and should feel tight on the loosest hook but they'l give quickly enough.

EdwiniasRevenge · 26/06/2013 12:35

I am 33 under. I went to debs after one of these threads and was measured by fit, not measurement.

StatisticallyChallenged · 26/06/2013 12:46

"and was measured by fit, not measurement"

Hallelujah, a fitter without a tape measure Grin

Measuring at 33, in some bras/brands you might need the 32 (Freya, Curvy Kate etc) where as others (Gorgeous...) will probably be the 34. For strapless, what about the old Wonderbra Ultimates? I find them a little small in the back. Cup size standard to large - so try the 32DD and 34D maybe?

ComfortablyDumb · 26/06/2013 13:03

G??? That might explain why I prefer braless at home, even I do scare the postman (bless him)

FitByForty · 26/06/2013 13:10

Right, I've heeded the advice on here and measured myself as a 36FF! As someone who has worn a 38D since having the kids, this is going to take some getting used to.
But I've ordered a selection of styles around this new size and will let you know how I get on
Looking forward to no more falling down straps (I can't be the only one who just accepted that's how bras are surely Grin )

EdwiniasRevenge · 26/06/2013 16:04

And while I was in the fitting room today (debs) fitting myselfthe fitter was telling a client to lean forward and pull all of the breast tissue into the bra.

Sounds like it was a good fitter.

ComfortablyDumb · 30/06/2013 17:52

So, I went to M&S today. It didn't go well.

Lured by their current offer of a fiver off a spend if you get 'fitted' I have discovered that I am a malformed lump of a woman that they don't actually make bras for.

I am apparently Hmm a 40A. They only had 40Bs, and despite the cups being too big (quelle surprise) or in the fitters words 'a bit of a nightmare' she thought I could make the best of it. If I didn't buy that bra (I didn't) I wouldn't get the discount as she wouldn't have 'fitted' any others I picked up.

Good times.

freerangeeggs · 30/06/2013 18:02

Ok, I'm finally going to bite the bullet and ask for help here!!

I've recently lost weight and all my old bras (34D) are riding up at the back and flapping loose at the cups. Admittedly I haven't taken very good care of them doing think they've stretched too.

Just measured myself - 29 tight under bust and 37 dangling over (but I did that one very loosely - is that right?).

In La Senza today (why does everything have to be frigging neon??) and I tried on a 34C which was kind of fitting but with a bit of a bulge at the boobs.

Thanks in advance :)

SorrelForbes · 30/06/2013 18:02

Bloody M&S. They are beyond shit. I can almost guarantee that you are not a 40A.

It would be great if you could tweet/FB/email M&S about your experience.

SorrelForbes · 30/06/2013 18:06

Ok you need to try a 28G, 28FF, 30FF and 30F. I would expect the 28 to fit better in many brands.

I would expect you to have overspill in a 34C as the cup volume is only roughly equal to a 28E.

AuntPepita · 30/06/2013 18:08

Not surprised a 34c didn't fit! Try a 28f for starters.

AuntPepita · 30/06/2013 18:09

Argh, 28ff. Basic maths fail.

freerangeeggs · 30/06/2013 18:12

28FF!! Bloody Nora!! :O

Thank you ladies - I'm desperate to go try now!

What style do you think is best? I need uplift... My friend said balconette?

SorrelForbes · 30/06/2013 18:43

Yes, balconettes and half cups are usually very good for lift and plunges are good for cleavage.

lookout · 30/06/2013 20:18

Sorry it's taken me so long to get back. I am measuring 33.5 around / 40 dangling. I am wearing a 34FF at the moment, am pretty confident in the 34 but all my cups are so gapey.

Also my other big problem is that all of my bras show over the top and under the arms of most of my summery vests and dresses. Are there any styles that are 'skimpier'?

SorrelForbes · 30/06/2013 20:36

lookout On your measurements alone (which are only a rough starting point) I'd say try a 32FF, 32F, 34F and a 34E.

How does your newest/least stretched 34FF feel if you do it up back to front? What style is it? I find, as do many others, that many moulded type bras always gape no matter what size you try.

I feel your pain with the bra showing with vests thing. The problem is that as you go into the bigger sizes, some bras do get higher at the sides. I tend to buy vests and dresses that have smallish armholes. I'm sure married or Stats will be along with some suggestions on specific styles/bra names to try.

lookout · 30/06/2013 20:40

Sorrel Thanks for the info. Really go down to a 32??

My tightest 34FF feels comfy, sort of well-worn, but I can pull it a fair way out from my front. Now that you say that, it is the moulded ones that are worse. I find the moulded bras generally speaking more comfortable, all the non-moulded I've tried come up to high in the cleavage for me and are excessively painful.

I definitely had the feeling that all the bigger sizes seemed to come up higher in the armpit Sad. Will wait and see if there is some more advice. Thanks again!

StatisticallyChallenged · 30/06/2013 20:57

In bigger cups (and well fitting bras) armholes can be a big problem. I have a combination of solutions for summery clothes

Bravissimo Satine - plunge and relatively delicate straps by my standards so gets under most low cut things
Wonderbra Ultimate strapless - for obvious reasons. I have a nude and a black too which helps
Bras in several colours - I have a red dress which shows the edge of bra in certain positions, looks a lot less obvious if the bra itself matches!
A bra which is good under square necks - for me this is my Ewa Michalak S Wisniowska but a good half cup would also work.
And when all else fails, vest tops - I have a collection with lace a couple of inches thick

lookout · 30/06/2013 21:08

Thanks Statistically will check out the satine. I have a strapless, think it's a deco which is good but still come pretty high up so is not great for low cut vests. Will also try a half cup, hadn't thought of that. Thanks again!

ButWhhhyyyMummy · 30/06/2013 21:11

please help what am I doing Wrong?*

I have been following the advice and have managed to discover in normal bras I'm a 36E.

However

DS2 is 8 mths and still EBF and i can not get a nursing bra to fit for love nor money Sad

They all are too big between the cups and will not sit flush (or even close to be honest)

What on earth am I doing wrong? I'm 36.5 round the back and 42 around the bust.

TIA

StatisticallyChallenged · 30/06/2013 21:14

Nursing bras are problematic - assuming you mean soft cups they will never sit flat between the boobs. Have you tried the anita wired ones?
