Discount codes and retailers

OK this is a bit of a rant and obviously not really a big deal but . . .

Why is it that still in these days do some retailers reward customers who very rarely shop with them with brilliant discount codes where as more loyal customers, well they get nothing.

And yes I'm thinking of you Matches.

I much prefer the strategy of My-Wardrobe where they reward you for loyalty.

I know this is how marketing has always traditionally been done, but now in the age of social media its so apparent when codes are being dished out and it really makes me not want to buy from retailers who do this.

If you are a regular repeat customer you will probably buy the stuff full price, they don't need to give you a code. If you only shop once in a blue moon it might temp you to spend money you would have spent elsewhere.

Yes but do those customers become good loyal customers - I doubt it - they just wait for a code.

But it really puts me off retailers who don't reward loyalty and I will therefore go to NAP or my-wardrobe rather than matches for example.
