City walking shoes

butterfliesinmytummy · 30/04/2013 11:59

We're going to be quite a lot of trekking around cities in the uk this summer and I'm looking for a lace up shoe to go with crops etc. I dont want a trainer or a brogue (got some, love them but not sure I can walk more than a couple of hours in them as they are a bit narrow for me). Was looking at Clarks and Ecco

Are they ok or a bit mumsy? I'm heading for 40 but trying to resist Grin

I agree about the look of the Sketchers. I am watching this thread with interest because I am always after a pair of comfy shoes that don't look frumpy, but refuse to wear expensive plimsolls.

Has anyone linked to these yet - here?

I would love some comfy, city type, walking shoes.

I've just bought some fit flop trainers, and it's like walking on air. Mine are the hi-top sort, so wouldn't work with cropped trews, but the Super T versions look pretty good, and avoid the slightly NHS-issue appearance of their older models.

Sorry cant link - on phone.

And I hear people speak highly of their due ballet flats, also. Tho they're not cheap.

I have those in black LIZS. I love them.

Yes, Geox loafers are very comfortable - have done a lot of city walking in them. Some of their styles are a bit frumpy but plenty aren't - they do some very good Tods like shoes for much less money.

PS - really don't like either of the first two OP linked to (but then I am a Clarks-phobe - have only ever found about one style - the brogues - I liked there). Find Ecco generally dreary.

Particularly don't like the bright pink/mauve colours - I'd stick to something like tan which goes with everything. But each to their own!

Me again - am just reading the thread properly.

Another vote here for Fitflop trainers - these are really comfortable and my standard wear for non-summer serious city walking (as opposed to everyday commuting). Though added a pair of Geox ankle boots to that on a visit to Paris a couple of months ago.

The most important things for me are plenty of cushioning/thickness for soles (specially if going to somewhere with lots of cobbles, like Rome) and some support across front of foot. Trainers do this perfectly of course but it's also possible to find shoes/sandals that do.

I am doomed. Everything linked to so far makes my whole body go into convulsions of horror. There MUST be something out there that isn't super-flat Converse and isn't a trainer or a Cornish pastie, surely?

Went through two airports today and almost everyone over 50 there was wearing the type of sporty mary janes linked to earlier on this thread (either in faded black or bright 'fun' colors) with capris

I'm travelling too and chose to wear my trusty navy suede loafers, happy with the choice so far. A car shoe can be good too. I have a pair of Geox loafers (not these) and while they will never be the height of cool they are well-made and extremely comfortable. I read Vogue and Elle on the plane and either one (Elle?) featured loafers too.

Italians wear flat desert boots a lot during the transition from cool to warm weather. They look good with full-length jeans, capris are not a popular look there.

I am over 50 and loathe those Mary Janes.

This type of topic is a popular one - comfy stylish shoes. There is a market for them so why haven't any of the shoe manufacturers realised it yet?

I'm coveting these or these

Sorry posts crossed. Merrell sandals/slides are v comfy too.

I vote for FlipFlop trainers too. They took me round New York and Florida theme parks last year and I have really bad problems with my legs and ankles following an accident. They were bliss.

I would try merrell half sandal half trainer. They have a closed solid toe and a Velcro strap but are mostly mesh. I have them in a sage colour from a couple of years back and they go with most things. I will be wearing them to Glastonbury this year (first timer at 41!)

And will be taking Wellies of course....

Remus I find the Supergas much more supportive than Converse, sole is far thicker. I will no not never wear a Cornish pastie on me feet

Thanks Gilly - will have a look. But I hate the look of them - they look like Emo shoes to me! :) Also, I have very skinny ankles and calves, so can tend to look a bit childish/golf club-esque.

Keds might suit a slim ankle/leg better ?

I like the look of those. I tried the Sketchers Go Walk on again today, but at £46 - £50 a pair depending on where you buy them it is a huge amount of money for what are really just plimsolls. Even so they are simply the most comfortable pair of shoes I have ever tried.

I have these and the leather is ridiculously soft - very comfortable to walk around in, and I wear with jeans, 7/8 trousers, rolled chinos etc. If the weather holds this weekend I intend to try them with bare legs and a knee length denim belted dress.

They have a hot pink colour if you're bolder than me, and they do a ballet flat style which is the same leather.

Report
Bunbaker · 02/05/2013 19:08

I have tried on the ballet flats in that range and they aren't very comfortable and certainly not suitable for spending a lot of time in walking around sightseeing.

Can I recommend this site for a bit if euro-style?
