Adult braces

Come on, who has them?! Or would secretly want them?!

I'm 25 and am having the impressions taken or my invisalign on Monday. Only mild crowding of bottom teeth but always said that when I get married I would have a perfect smile for the photos and now that dp are talking about getting hitched I decided to bite the bullet and go for it.

Has anyone else had them and got any words of wisdom re tips for treatment? I'm a teacher so the thought of standing in front of 30 kids with even a minuscule lisp is worrying even though they won't see the brace!

I was a teacher with adult braces! But not Invisalign, which are completely invisible...the orthodontist persuaded me to get clear train tracks, which were horrendous and a terrible idea. You won't regret getting Invisalign, I promise :)

Ok so the choices for me are:

1. invisalign
   
2. incognito (train tracks at the back of teeth circa £9k!)
   
3. leave my teeth as they are. I had train tracks as a teen but without a retainer so have mild re-crowding of my bottom teeth so could have a fixed retainer fitted now behind the teeth to prevent further movement.

If you have only mild overcrowding on lower jaw and it doesn't bother you much then I would leave and see how you feel later on.

I am late 50s! I never had the option of various braces when younger and my useless dentist then said my teeth would straighten up- which they didn't.

My mum had braces and extractions at 75- so it's never too late!

bopeep I had clear brackets and what can only be described as a cream-tinged wire; even when my bands were newly fitted they looked yellow. The feel was pretty horrendous, too. I would just pay the extra for Invisalign :)

I echo what NottsLeicsSomethingSomething said (sorry, can't remember full username!).

I had six-month-smiles, in fact I just had them off two days ago. In total it was nine months for me. They are noticeable and I did have a slight lisp, which, thankfully, disappeared as soon as they were removed.

Discolouration - of the ligature thingies, mostly - was definitely an issue. Coffee, tea and highly-coloured foods will do this. I generally went for an adjustment every four weeks or so, and by the third week they'd be looking a bit manky , as I am a 3/4 cups of tea/coffee a day girl.

The results have been very good, though. I have the wire fixed retainers now and am going back tomorrow for removable retainers and whitening stuff (included in the cost).

Was definitely worth doing, for me.

I got my Inman mid Oct (top) for Jan wedding. They do work in an incredibly fast time due to the way they are tensioned/sprung. However they have to be worn pretty much all the time, they are big (ie closing your lips can be hard initially) and speech is affected quite a lot. When removed (eg for eating/teeth cleaning) my teeth were super sore, however it did an amazing job. Would recommend (if an option for you)

Don't know about the Damon ones but my 6 month smiles are very noticeable (unlike the pics in the promo booklet I was given where they look almost invisible!)

Jazzdalek good to hear you have had a good result. Are your teeth perfectly lined up now? I am due to have bottom ones off on Tuesday but although teeth are definitely better they are not as perfectly straight as I had hoped, need to speak to dentist tues - don't know if there's a limit for each person on how much can be achieved?

Derby my alignment is pretty damn good, although probably not perfect. When I had my consultation the dentist told me I could do SMS and have a good result, or, if I wanted them to be absolutely perfect, go for the traditional 2+ years in train-track braces but jaw surgery might also be necessary . I need to get back into training and work ASAP, really, and I'm not after a perfect Hollywood smile, so I plumped for the SMS.

As I say, the alignment now is actually really nice; my smile does not look perfect, as my teeth are all different sizes: bottom canines are very big, bottom incisors noticeably shorter, I still have a couple of baby teeth (!) and one of my top incisors is smaller than the other. I have a real mish-mash of a mouth . Before braces my bottom teeth were VERY crowded and crooked, the top ones less so but still quite wonky. The improvement is huge. Once the course of whitening is done we will be considering some composite bonding work to even things out a bit.

Quoted £7k for incognito and 10-15month treatment, teeth straight by 6months. I really want them! Price rather eek though!

been to dentist this morning and quite please as she decideded to leave the bottom ones on for a bit longer afterall, they have been on for 11 months now so I would rather wait a bit longer & get the best result possible.

Coffee1Sugar £7k is a lot! But still less than getting veneers, are you going to go for it?!

Yeh I am £2k deposit and then can split therm rest over 12 or 18 months interest free

I had proper railway tracks with clear brackets in my 30s. It was a faff, but worth it. My teeth were beautiful afterwards, although 5 years later they’ve gone slightly crooked again as I don’t wear my retainer religiously. Still massively better than they were before, though, so would recommend.

I'm not sure why, but my comment has been deleted . Was just sharing how good my treatment was. I used Invisalign and it was so great having a discreet treatment! How exciting for you though that you can look forward to straight teeth! It really is a huge boost to your confidence and I am so excited to hear how you get on :)
