Hand moisturiser for very dry hands

My OH has just started a new job and due to a mixture cold, dust and manual work his hands have gone very dry and flaky.
Can anyone recommend a hand moisturiser?
He's tried Dove's Intense Hand Moisturiser and similar others but they do not work.

L'occitane do an amazing one, I think it is hemp or something but I'm sure someone else will know it exactly.

I love the Beauty Balm by Neal's Yard. It smells divine and it's really healing. It's a little greasy though, and expensive.

tried the unscented neutrogena tube? Works for my cracked hands (really much too delicate for any sort of work ;) To be frank, in desperation I also applied it to my big, red common-cold wrecked nose, and it helped that too

I've tried all sorts over the years. A lot of the good ones are quite hard to rub in to sore, cracked skin, but the Aveeno cream is really effective and very easy to rub in. He could try putting a really good layer of cream on his hands overnight and sleeping in (pref thin cotton) gloves.

L'Occitane Shea Butter is the one that GeneHuntsMistress might be referring to. Fabulous stuff and it doesn't smell too girly.

Weleda Skin Food is the best moisturiser ever and smells like oranges, it's devine and costs about £8 but worth it.

It's really thick and melts onto the skin, I use it all over.

My auntie has horses and dogs and is also a full time carer to my grandma so one way or another her hands are either being washed constantly, and exposed to dirt, muck, the elements etc. She has recently found a revelation in Aveeno hand cream which have transformed her hands from cracked and sore hard skin back to normal hands.

The Body Shop Hemp one is very good too, but I think Aveeno might have the edge.

Try the Neutrogena FOOT cream for dry or damaged feet - it's awesome for dry hands - best thing I've ever tried and I get very dry hands in Winter

Climb On!. I have climber friends who swear by it. A bit pricy, but no more so than some of the others suggested above (and if he's bothered by such things, a touch more 'manly').

When mine are really bad from the cold I find sudocream works really well. It doesn't really rub in very well as it is so thick, so I put it on at bedtime and it has worked wonders by morning.

Body shop hemp is fab!! And cheap too

I've mentioned this on mumsnet before, but I layer 3 moisturisers, then put gloves on overnight and my hands are soft next morning, so you can then use one of the other recommended creams upthread to keep DH's hands in shape.

The layers are:

vitamin e oil - I just pierce a vitamin e capsule to get this
cocoa butter - I use the solid cocoa butter from Palmer's as it's more concentrated
Vaseline on top
Cotton gloves / socks to keep the mess in

It's really effective, now i just have to stop taking the cotton gloves off in my sleep

Aveeno hand cream is brilliant. I also found swapping to oilatum soap or one for eczema for hand washing and using surcare washing up liquid helps too.

Jurlique rose hand cream is amazing and tested and approved by my mum who is very particular. Probably not the manly smell you are after though

Body shop hemp and L'occitane Shea butter are both great.

Another vote for Aveeno hand cream :)

The best ones I've found for my DH who works outside all weathers is L'occitane Shea Butter or Body Shop Hemp...

No particular brand but any cream for cracked heels is good for very dry hands

Just coming on here to post the very same question - no need now!

Two weeks of dc gastroenteritis and constant handwashing have left my hands looking like an alligator's battered old handbag. Flippin' sore too.

Have tried L'Occitane, neutrogena and baby exczema cream but they only seem to work temporarily, then I'm back to ol' reptile skin.

Going to try aveeno but .... Does it sting on really chapped hands?!

Elizabeth Arden eight hour cream - not the hand cream version get the original.

I use Clinque Deep Comfort hand cream when I can afford it - as it does feel very comforting to the sore feeling I get when my hands are very dry.

Once the worst of a bout of dryness is over and I'm feeling less sore, I use a mix of oil and sugar (sunflower oil and caster sugar) to exfoliate. It gets rid of the layers of dead, crocodiley skin and lets the moisturiser work better on the newer skin underneath.

Ha! pip, I tried the oil exfoliator thing. Except, erm, I used salt instead of sugar. My alligator hands were on fire. I now know where I went wrong ... .

Neutrogena Norwegian formula. Lovely stuff, swear by it
