so speaketh my mother.. and it got me wondering. I wonder fi they are?

I do sometimes look at women obviously very brown of hair who keep dying it blonde ( or more often greeny grey blonde) and wonder why they dont choose c shade darker that might tone in with your complexion

I have never been blonde - is it a scratch youve got to itch? DO you go lighter and lighter all the time?

that's crazy. I've never been blonde, it would look terrible on me.

Anyway, blondes are endangered, we'll all have black or brown hair soon.

I would love to have dark hair. Doesn't suit me though, am naturally dark blonde/red and have lighter highlights put in.

I think its easier to disguise grey with blonder colours hence so many older women go lighter. Its quite hard for dyed dark hair to look natural - the same with red hair - also you need to get it re-dyed very very often.

I'm fair and always have been but am careful not to go too light - I have low-lights as well to avoid the over-dyed look.

I'm a brunette and dye my hair black and red, the only time it is ever blonde is when I'm putting a vibrant colour over the top. I'd look like a corpse with blonde hair.

I'm naturally dishwater blonde and have highlights. About six months ago it came to my attention that I had white straw on my head. I have now toned it down (a bit). I would love to go dark or red, but it would be a huge amount of maintenance - when the DDs are a bit older I will go mega hot red.

I think highlights look great, but they're addictive - I used to have a lovely multi-toned streaky (nicer than it sounds) effect, but if you keep getting it done then it ends up as an all over colour. Then he hairdresser says 'ooh let's put some of your original colour through it to break it up' and then you have orange stripes going through the palest yellow...

I'd like to go dark brown tbh but DH likes me blonde and won't allow it. Bad feminist I know.

I agree. I've been brunette all my life and loved it. However at 40, my grey roots are beginning to take over my life and unless I want to dye them every 2 weeks my hairdresser has recommended I begin to go lighter.

A cynical former flatmate of mine has a theory on this: she suspects some brunette women never get over the fact that they were once little blonde girls.

i have always had very dark brown hair (even as a child). I have very pale skin and green eyes. I've been blonde and red. They all looked good imo, but i was in my 20's. Now i'm mid 30's i am darker again with some ombre lights thru the lenth - this breaks up the 'block' colour look and doesn't get regrowth, it also oddly looks quite natural.

When i was blonde people presumed it was natural because of my colouring and some even asked why i dyed my eyebrows brown

Now i have lots of grey i have to colour my natural colour over it and it is so hard to find a 'natural' pure brown which doesn't have loads of red/chestnut tones in.

I've never been blonde. It would look terrible I think. I have blue eyes but very dark eyebrows and lashes and tache. I would look like Alistair Darling.

I am Dark Ash Blonde naturally, but have had highlights since I was 15 three times a year religiously!

I'm a natural redhead and I've been hanging on to my colour with the help of my hairdresser for the last few years.

However, the grey is taking over and I don't want to be one of those pensioners that look like Ronald MacDonald so I have started to have more blonde highlights in.

My hair is a fairish mousey colour. If I dye my hair any darker than light Brown, I look ridiculous. I dye my hair a dark caramel blonde.

I was a little blonde girl. My golden Afro was quite a thing to behold. If I did it now (and I have absolutely no desire to) I would look diseased. Mind you, I haven't got any yen to dye the grey, either. I am developing quite a nice grey stripe right down the middle of my head, which I am rather excited about. Very Bond villain.

I'm a dark blonde/light brown but have dyed it blonde forever, I have light blue eyes and very pale skin, dark hair make me really washed out. I looked bloody horrendous in a dark wig.

Nah. I was dark blonde in my teens (dyed) but have been a brunette ever since (now mid thirties). I have got a bit of a mahogany/reddish hue to it at the moment, and intend to go slightly lighter with caramel highlights soon. But blonde? Never!

I'm a highlighted mouse and I'd LOVE to have gorgeous sleek, dark brown locks but unfortunately my face is just too damn plain to pull it off. Gals who look good brunette tend to have naturally better features than the rest of us, imho.

Thanks, Maat. I've hankered after a stripe for ages. My sister is grey at the temples and it actually looks really good.

I'm in a kind of 'Won't dye the grey' refusenik group with my sisters and a couple of colleagues. My sister says Nature doesn't get her colour schemes wrong and I think she's right. People don't look odd with their natural hair colour really, but once you change it it's like a cascade of intervention to dye eyebrows, change lashes, have fake tan, whatever, just to get the right look.
