Handbags for beginners...

I have reached the grand old age of 33 without ever buying a real handbag (rather than a cheap faux leather one from somewhere boring...). I need a large bag for work. I have been looking for a while but have no idea of brands. Budget maybe up to £100? I think I might have too many criteria:

Must be black, or silver, or grey, or purple, possibly deep red.

Must be large enough for A4 papers, and my lunch, and an iPad, as well as all the usual handbag crap.

Can't be Radley - find them annoying.

Metalic trimmings to be in silver, not gold.

Mustn't look like it's my mother's. Mustn't look like I'm a teenager. But maybe has something a little bit quirky (not sure what). But needs to be suitably smart as I wear smart or suit for work.

Must be able to close with a zip, not just a popper, to prevent people stealing my purse while on the Tube.

This looks ok, but just a bit boring.

Any help gratefully received!

The pippa bag is on sale... www.modalu.com/shop/sale/pippa-grab-black.html

Slightly over again but looks practical and expensive

Would you have a purple bag if both your wool winter coat and lighterweight spring / autumn coat were purple?

Why not?

Just worried it might look too matchy-matchy...not all of my coats are purple though...(just the two I wear most often to work).

Thank you to others posting suggestions! I am being v fussy, and don't want a brown bag, or gold metal trimings though...

Am now on eBay...

Ooh, quite like the Tabitha one, possibly a bit small to fit everything in though.

One day when I was feeling particularly mentally challenged, I managed to inadvertently dress myself head to toe in purple: shoes, tights, skirt, coat, jumper. I was met with rapture wherever I went that day.

darling OP, welcome to the world of 'bag happiness" you have just started on the road to finding the ultimate bag. You will never find it, but you will enjoy the journey! can you guess, i love bags! xxx

lovesherdogstoomuch · 23/03/2013 21:14

PS FairPhyllis: purple is the BEST colour. i am going to a black and white ball, and i;m forced to wear purple. sigh.

Wigeon · 23/03/2013 21:46

Gone for purple quilted one! And had to add in a little clutch bag for a wedding I'm going to later in the year, just to get the total cost up to enough to get free delivery Grin!

lovesherdog - oh gosh, what have I started? I think I'll know the perfect bag when I see one - and I have no idea how I can have just spent the entire evening browsing hundreds and hundreds of handbags and still not entirely found The One!

Thanks again for all the help everyone. I think my two lessons are:

don't go to the shops - just look online, and
browse department stores because they have zillions of choices
