Don't know, Frugal. It's probably a very complicated interaction between genes and environment (like just about everything). I'd say that experiences/olfactory memories and lifestyle (e.g. whether you cook a lot or not) play their parts in preferences (I'm from a psych back ground) to a large degree.

ToysRLuv · 11/05/2013 19:13

Shouldn't forget the influence of brand perceptions and marketing..

Haberdashery · 11/05/2013 20:02

I quite like carroty smells. It's the cardboard that puts me off. It's a very specific type of cardboard in my head, too - the grey furry stuff, slightly damp.

I also like the green violet leaf smell. I'd rank that in my top ten of good things to smell, along with fig leaf, tar, petrol, bonfires, seaweed and some other rather less refined stuff!

And, GAH. I had a list in my gmail drafts of perfumes I want to try. Just clicked delete by accident (stupid new interface) and it appears to be gone for ever, it's not even in trash. And I can't remember more than four or five of them.

coffeeinbed · 11/05/2013 20:33

I love the dry cardboard smell.

Haberdashery · 11/05/2013 20:43

It's interesting because I quite like papery smells. But I can't bear cardboard, for some reason...

coffeeinbed · 11/05/2013 20:47

Oh, I assumed you meant paper smell.
Should have read properly.
For me it's all paper.

ToysRLuv · 11/05/2013 20:53

I like tar, as well. Where I come from it's even used in soaps/shampoos and sweets (had some yummy tar ice cream the other day). Keep wondering about CdG series 6 Tar.. anyone tried it?

Haberdashery · 11/05/2013 21:02

Me! I really like it. It's surprisingly untarry and wearable after the opening (and a bit overpowering) blast of roadworks.

Fascinated by the idea of tar sweets! Coal tar soap is a favourite of mine, though. And I like the Lush shampoo that is mainly tar and creosote, judging by smell.

Coffee, I do see that paper and cardboard are pretty similar. But I like one and not the other. No idea why. Possibly I am a bit odd!

ToysRLuv · 11/05/2013 21:10

Haberdashery: Cool.. will try track it down.

Also, if you fancy it, I'll send you a packet of tar sweets if you pm me your address Smile

I'll be taking a ton of tar and salty liquorice sweets back to the UK when I leave in a week.

FrugalFashionista · 11/05/2013 21:14

Haber will need to send you some tar sweets one day
Toys Lonestar Memories is the ultimate creosote...

Someone bought a new liquid soap that is perfumed with a lot of calone I do like Heeley's Sel Marin but this smells more like nasty aftershave or a car air freshener.

Viviennemary · 11/05/2013 21:23

I've tried a few samples but the ones I like are fearsomely expensive and difficult to get hold of. Sad Bois de Violette is lovely. And I had never tried Chanel 18 before. That is totally amazing although quite a strange one. Nothing like the other chanels.

ToysRLuv · 11/05/2013 21:29

Frugal: You probably know about this, but I was gobsmacked to find out that CdG had made a fragrance in collaboration with Artek! Bizarre.. but very cool.

ToysRLuv · 11/05/2013 21:31

Vivienne: Try here, or on e-bay for decants.. Full bottles in most nice fragrances are a rare treat indeed (unless you're loaded).

FrugalFashionista · 11/05/2013 21:37

Toys I know of it, still haven't smelled it. Must try ASAP!
Very cool and forward-thinking of Artek.

Basking in the jumbo-jet sized candle-snuff tail flame of Chanel No. 22.
A magnificent perfume...

No 18 is great as well Vivienne. I don't have a sample at hand but remember a super intense jammy rose-iris-ambrette, something you'd think would drive bees crazy Wink

Viviennemary · 11/05/2013 21:46

Thanks Toys. That would be a great idea of a decant from ebay. And Frugal thought I only had a teensy sample of the NO 18 it total bowled me over as it's just totally unlike anything I've ever tried before.

Fuzzybirds · 11/05/2013 21:55

Woo busy on here today! Another violet lover here, although still have lots on my to try list to smell. Vivienne I remember recently seeing someone on ebay selling lots of Lutens decants, including Bois de Violette, might be worth a look.

My favourite violet so far is probably Insolence EdT, it's on my wishlist! Have been trying out Jean Patou's Sira des Indes today, very sweet and heady- I get bananas, magnolia and sandalwood. Sounds weird but is actually really gorgeous.

Haber have you tried L'Occitane's Eau des Baux? It's toboacco-y but fresh too, would be lovely for summer.

Haberdashery · 11/05/2013 23:08

No, haven't tried that, Fuzzy. That sounds well worth a look. I'm going shopping on Monday so may well give that a try.

I would love to try some tar sweets. That sounds like such an odd idea but so interesting.

ToysRLuv · 11/05/2013 23:24

Haber: pm me and I'll pop some in the post for you. Smile

Trapped painful nerve in arm has been keeping me awake searching e-bay for yet more stuff to buy. Happily the rather large amount of nurofen plus I took an hour ago is finally kicking in properly..

Olifer · 12/05/2013 07:25

I guess it is pretty important to know about fragrance continues ... There are a lot of negative reviews concerning in the result...www.pissedconsumer.com/browse-reviews/cosmetics.html

It is always better to get as much information as possible before buying a perfume

Merle · 12/05/2013 08:18

Well ladies owing to this thread (and a day of poorliness on the sofa) I have entered the fascinating world of high-end perfumes/Ebay. I am currently bidding on a sample of Après and watching one of Bois.

Fuckitthatlldo · 12/05/2013 08:48

Not impressed with Shem el Nessim - pure Johnsons baby powder. Am I correct in thinking that there are sites where people swap samples? Would love to have a look.

Sorry you're not feeling well Merle. Hope you catch some lovely things on ebay to cheer you up!

ChocsAwayInMyGob · 12/05/2013 08:56

Fuck- yes try basenotes or Fragrantica. Great forums for swaps.

There's a really good Prada violet perfume for sale in Savers for 19.99 for 50ml. dark green box, can't remember name but it was gorgeous when I tested it.

Frugal- I couldn't get on with Chanel No 22. It made my fillings jangle! It also reminded me of both Iris Poudre and White Linen. Very cold and silvery!

Ladame · 12/05/2013 08:58

Toys it's so true what you said about preferences for perfumes depending on olfactory memories and lifestyle. I'm a chef and can't stand perfumes that smell of food - i.e. Gourmands. If I try a fragrance and it even dares to dry down into a flavour of some kind, we have to part company. The only exception is citrus. My dd was wafting about in Alien last night and to me it was a strong violet, am I right? Note to self, buy the famous perfumista book. Am saving up for a spend on some of the suggestions on the thread too.

Fuckitthatlldo · 12/05/2013 09:07

Thanks Chocs I will have a look. I've already been reading Basenotes for the reviews and it's been really helpful, although I must admit some of the reviews have made me snort. Pretentious much? Grin

Ladame what is this famous book of which you speak? I'm intrigued.

ToysRLuv · 12/05/2013 09:37

Fuckit: I'd assume it's the Turin, Sanchez book "Perfumes". I've got it on my Kindle. It's addictive.

Have you seen that advert for Gordon's Gin with Philip Glenister? I hate it, but it's got a point. I rather think that perfumes as a hobby has got lots in common with wines and such. You can be as pretentious or unpretetious as you like. I prefer the middle groud of useful/unintentional pretentiousness. Smile
