DH and swimming trunks in France

DH is lovely, but he's not a slim as he used to be now he's reached middle age. Pretty fit, actually, but carries weight around his middle and has a bit of an overhang.

We've booked a holiday in France, where camp site rules insist on trunks (not shorts) for men in the pool. Can anyone help him find something halfway suitable? There's been a bit of ribbing about budgie smugglers around here, but I think he's actually quite worried.

They definitely enforce this rule in public pools in our part of France. The reason is apparently hygiene though I can't quite see the point and as poor DP pointed out the result is obscene!

We paid for all of us to go to a public pool in France. As we came down the first slide, the lifeguard waved us all over and told DH and both DS's that they needed to go and buy some Speedos at the shop in reception. It was a very, very expensive trip to the swimming pool! My DH was self conscious but soon got used to it as everyone was wearing Speedos. I find the rule a bit odd but vive la difference!

If it's for hygiene then surely they could wear Speedo under shorts?

No, the hygiene bit is because if you are wearing shorts, you could presumably be wearing them out and about all day and then jumping into the pool with them. Basically they don't want you wearing possibly dirty clothes into the pool, which is fair enough.

Am feeling a bit bleurgh right now - thinking of a bunch of middle aged, overweight, hairy blokes all strutting around in their budgie smugglers.

I need to see the Daniel Craig picture again.

I mentioned to DP the suggestion that they may be required to avoid stray pubes and he replied that given the state of our public pool a few pubes would be an improvement! I have to say I agree, given the overall filth it's a bit rich to worry about pubes, shorts being worn all day and similar minor cleanliness infractions.
