nails suddenly splitting

I have up to very recently had quite nice nails and they rarely broke even when quite long. they have now started to split and break really easily even though I am cutting them short. I have got some nail oil but this hasn't helped so far.

does anyone know why this may be happening? could it be a sign of a health problem or related to menopause?

I have thought about keeping them painted to protect them but not sure if that would exacerbate the problem.

Have you used gel at all? I used gel once and it has totally ruined mine! It's over a year now and they are still weak!

no. I have never used gel or any other false nails.

Poor diet? Try silica - utterly gross and huge pills from Hollan and Barrett

Mine have started splitting and breaking really easily too, I think the cold weather doesn't help, it it dries out my nails anything like as much as it does the skin on my hands it might be the reason. I really don't think there's anything much wrong with my diet and I've never used gel or any other salon system nails. The only other thing for me is that I had major surgery about 5 months ago, which may have left me a bit run down, I would guess that that is about the time when my nail tips now were forming - is there anything like that with you Well?

no illness as such but have been working hard and quite stressed alot of the time. diet not great as lots of snacking at work rather than actually taking a lunch break

I guess it could be a sign to take better care of myself. does anyone know if nail polish is bad for nails

Oh mine have just gone like this. Since I had a baby 7 weeks ago.

I wonder if it's folate deficiency as that seems to do for your hair as well - though my hair always gets thinner after pg, that's the hormone drop.

You could try folic acid or iron.
