how to clean secondhand earrings?

I bought myself some dressy secondhand earrings from a local auction house 6 months ago and haven't yet worn them. I have a big dinner tomorrow night and could finally wear them. I have just noticed that while they are very sparkly (these are emerald studs) they have a little bit of someone else's ear gunk on the posts . I can get that off but need to disinfect them.
Can I just give them a good dunk in surgical spirit?

Yes you can and use an old toothbrush to give them a gentle scrub so no nasty bits left.
