really sore split nail

Im new to growing my nails so never encountered this before, my thumb nail broke earlier so I cut it right down but noticed its split about 3/4 way into my nail bed and it's really hurting obviously I can't cut it that far down any ideas to stop the pain and it ripping more? Sad

I would be tempted to just cut it as short as you can and stick a plaster over it. Or go to a nail salon and see if they can do anything for you.
