Chapped lips.

Thought I'd post this in case it helps anyone suffering from sore and cracked lips.

I've had this problem for so long, could literally tear strips of skin off my bottom lip on a daily basis. Lovely, I know! I tried ALL the lips balms on the market, some gave more comfort than others but none actually stopped my lips peeling.

Turns out my lips were having a reaction to the toothpaste I was using or more specifically the SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate) in the toothpaste.

On someone's advice I tried an SLS free toothpaste, a Sensodyne one, and lo and behold two days later my lips are CURED.

I'm quite happy about this Grin

Interesting- my lips are so dry I could tear skin off them ( and do ) I use Carmex but I also think a lippie I like is doing some damage too.

I was told to skim my finger over my the ridge/fold between the nose and cheek, then rub the finger over my lips. The natural oils in the skin are the just the type needed to moisturise the lips.

Toothpaste is a bugger because it dries the lips out, so I give my lips a good rub with a hot, wet face cloth then dry and apply a few layers diprobase.

I had the same problem and it took years to realise it was my toothpaste! I'm ok with sensodyne too. It was my friend (a retired medic) who suggested it could be from toothpaste and told me to rinse my mouth and lips round with water after brushing. I had this sort of membraneous (is that a word!) layer that I could pull off my lips and always thought that if anything it was from lipstick/gloss. No problem though since using sensodyne and rinsing round gob/lips.

Don't laugh but I use nipple cream on my lips! Mine get soooo dry and cracked and whilst bfeeding I put it on by mistake (2 pots to hand, one lip salve one nipple cream... picked up the wrong one) but it was brilliant! Never looked back!

I have this problem. Can anyone link to the right kind of Sensodyne?

This is the one I use

Sensodyne Extra Fresh

I think most of the Sensodyne ones are SLS free, just check the ingredients list. I must have looked at a 20 toothpastes before finding one without.

Oh thanks for this info! Myself and one of the boys have really bad lips, carmex on every 20 minutes.
SLS is really bad for my youngest's eczema, took us ages, repeated trips to the doctors and dermatologists all of whom gave us creams with SLS in it. Turns out thats the ingredient that continues the itching cycle. We switched to Aveeno and use SLS shampoo from the Body Shop (rainforest) and its practically gone.
Now for the toothpaste . . .
